A Morris chair is an early type of reclining chair, the design was adapted by The Morris & Company (William Morris), from a prototype owned by Ephraim Colman in rural Sussex, England. An Anglo-Colonial Carved Hardwood Reclining Chair mid-19th c. related to the designs of Lockwood de Forest (American 1850-1932) and William Morris (English 1834-1896) rectangular adjustable back shaped arms square uprights floral blocks serpent entwined legs height 41 in. width 29 in. depth 41 in. Note: The chair presented here shares its form with chairs designed by William Morris. The carvings appear to be closely related to those found in pieces attributed to Lockwood de Forest. De Forest was with Associated Artists in 1879 prior to being in India where he opened the Ahmedabad Wood Carving Company which supplied Associated Artists until their close in 1882. De Forest then returned to New York to open his own design firm.

Morris family Philadelphia side chair, Chippendale, walnut throughout with shell-carved crest and shaped highly figured splat, shell-carved cabriole legs and ball-and-claw feet, period slip seat with stamped initials "MC", Philadelphia, 1760-1780, 39-1/4 x 21-1/2 x 17 in. Excellent condition, original slip seat, knee blocking and returns, minor wear and abrasions to carved feet, very minor paint splatter, minor repair to one stile at joint with seat frame (possibly repinned). Early 20th century inscribed label on seat frame back "Anthony Morris IV 1705-1780. Chair lately at 'Olney' Philadelphia…"; Property of a Descendant of Anthony Morris of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
