VERY RARE HUCKS CAINES ATTRIBUTED MALLARD DRAKEGeorgetown, South Carolina, circa 1900, attributed to Hucks Caines, oversized, flat bottom style with weighted base, tack eyes, relief carved head, sticker on base, 8-1/2 x 17-3/4 x 7 in.
Note: The Caines Brothers (Joseph J. "Hucks" Caines (1876-1944), Edmund A. "Ball" Caines (1851-1914), R. Randolph "Sawney" Caines (1860-1938), Moultrie J. L. "Pluty" Caines (1870-1912), and Robert J. "Bob" Caines (1879-1923)) grew up on land at Hobcaw Barony in the South Carolina Low Country. In addition to being hunting guides for landowner Bernard Baruch, they were commercial fishermen and market gunners before the enactment of the first federal game laws in 1918. Caines family decoys are some of the most sought after of South Carolina makers and very few are known to have survived.
Condition:
working second coat of paint, separation at neck as made, surface dirt and accretions, chips and losses to paint particularly at speculum, wear commensurate with age and use, please note xray images depicting birdshot and internal supports at neck, weight attachment

working second coat of paint, moderate wear with some dents, chips and flaking, minor areas of retouch on left side and breast, retouch at neck seam, plugged hole in back midline with some retouch, does not appear to be drilled all the way through, overall condition very good considering age, please note xray images depicting birdshot and internal supports at neck, restoration to top of bill with fill and old paint surface

Samuel G. Sewall, 11th Maine Vols., relieving him from duty as Division Ambulance Officer and turn over his ambulance, ambulance horses, and other property to Capt. Chas. Gamtson (?), by command of Major General D. Hunter, the letter dated Feb. 6th, 1862 from Morris Island SC, referencing the blockade and a sidewheeler being fired upon for 36 hours from Moultries guns, special requisition forms, letters from George C. Kelly, 1861-1865, etc.

Condition:
As found condition with wear consistent with age and use. There are some rips, tears, staining, etc. There are approximately 10 letters. Only one letter appears to mention the 11th Maine. Some are civilian letters.

Vol I: spines with wear to edges and leather cracking vertically loss at lower right edge; pages tight with very little foxing or staining; first 150 pages show wear to binding at lower crease but pages not loose (corresponds with loss at spine); Fort Moultrie map in good condition with tiny loss along left edge. Vol II: spines with wear to edges and leather cracking vertically; pages tight with very little foxing; all four maps in good condition with heavy creases and small tear at right edge caused by the process of repeated unfolding.

Fine carved mahogany Federal sofa, eight legs, carved and reeded scrolled crest rail, scrolled arms with reeded arm supports and legs, two center rear legs turned, mellow old surface overall, New York or Southern, early 19th century, 35 x 85 x 22 in. Breaks and repairs to legs (one front leg and one rear leg slightly loose), center rear leg with nail repairs, chips and losses to feet, not examined under upholstery, seat now fitted with solid bottom board and sprung seat, casters possibly original. Fine Southern walnut corner cupboard, walnut throughout with yellow pine secondary, one-case construction, glazed upper doors with shelved interior, hand-dovetailed drawer over paneled lower doors, white-painted interior, North Carolina or Virginia, early 19th century, 96-1/4 x 48 x 25 in. Refinished, cornice molding replaced, brass pulls replaced, original feet and blocking with some water damage, undisturbed backboards, one lower door with replaced hinges, other minor molding repairs, nail scars and other flaws.
