Coming to England in the 17th century by way of Italy and France, the Punch and Judy puppet show features Punch, the hunchbacked boastful husband, who beats his shrew-like wife Judy. The colors on Punch's bat are occasionally reversed with no effect on the market value. -->Punch and Judy is a popular glove-puppet show for children, featuring Mr. Punch and his wife, Judy. Presented on a stage in a tall booth covered with striped canvas, the puppeteer, known as the professor, has Punch, who remains on stage throughout the performance on his right hand. He works the rest of the characters with his left hand, bringing them on stage one at a time. Punch and Judy men were once familiar sights in large English cities, setting up their traveling stage on street corners, giving a half hour show, then moving on to the next neighborhood. Modern performers of Punch and Judy are traditionally seaside entertainers, found in British holiday resorts during the summer. Modeler David Biggs created this colorful character jug in 1963 with the always entertaining Mr. Punch on the handle.

Twenty-Six-Volume SemicentennialTwenty-Six-Volume Semicentennial Edition of "Punch, or the London Chiavari", London: Cassell & Co., Ltd., 1895, large quarto, half red Morocco with green buckram, marbled end papers, the top edges gilt, including Marion Harry Spielmann's (1858-1948) History of Punch and, in the remaining twenty-five volumes, complete facsimile copies of the first one hundred issues of "Punch", printed four per volume and covering the years 1841-1891. "Punch, or the London Chiavari" began publication on July 17, 1841 by Henry Mayhew and engraver Ebenezer Landells, although much of its success was due to its editor for the first thirty years, journalist and playwright Mark Lemon (1809-1870). ("Punch is nothing without lemon", it was remarked.) The journal featured humorous articles, jokes, puns and - above all - cartoons and caricatures of the newsworthy. After a rocky start, the satirical journal soon became a staple of British drawing rooms, in part thanks to its conservative politics and absence of offensive material. It enjoyed success with both the working class and the aristocracy, and on both sides of the Atlantic; Emily Dickinson and Herman Melville were both fans. It remained a major force in British humor well into the 20th century, reaching its greatest circulation during the 1940's. Its fates declined after World War II, and it finally ceased publication in 1992 (although Egyptian businessman Mohamed Fayed would purchase the rights and resurrect the magazine in 1996). This handsome and rare set offers the complete journal from its inception to the dawn of the Edwardian era, and a wry look at the fads, the famous, and the infamous of the Victorian era.
