The John Hancock Life Insurance Company was established in Boston in 1862. The company's name lacked standardization through the early twentieth century and was variably recorded as either the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company or the John Hancock Life Insurance Company through the 1940s. Early on, the firm was housed in Boston's first iteration of the John Hancock Building on Devonshire Street, where it was erected in 1891 based on designs by renowned American architect William G. Preston. The building was purchased by another bank in 1919 and demolished in 1922.

- ATTRIB. EASTMAN JOHNSON, PORTRAIT OF
ATTRIB. EASTMAN JOHNSON, PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMANConte crayon and gouache drawing on paper attributed to Eastman Johnson (American, 1824-1906); bust length, three quarter view portrait of an unknown gentleman in 19th century attire. Unsigned. Typed note en verso of frame reads "Crayon Portrait/by Eastman Johnson/Donated by Eugenia U. Harrod/March 17, 1913". Metal placard with artist attribution affixed lower center of frame. Housed under glass in an oval gilt wood frame. Sight: 25" H x 20" W. Framed: 31" H x 26" W. Mid 19th century. Biography: Eastman Johnson was an American genre painter born in Lovell, Maine in 1824. At the age of 18, he began making crayon portraits of prominent figures such as Dolly Madison, John Quincy Adams, and various senators as his father worked closely with the government at the time. He sought to open a gallery of all the portraits. In 1846 he moved to Boston and received patronage from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to make a series of these crayon portraits. In 1849, he traveled to Dusseldorf, Germany and began painting under Emanuel Leutze. He spent the rest of his time abroad studying Dutch Old Master painters, and returned to the United States in 1855. His fame began to spiral when he exhibited a series of genre paintings based on the daily lives of American slaves which he had studied at Mt. Vernon. His paintings created controversy because they exposed realistic slave activities and had a wide influence on peoples' knowledge and understanding of the institution at the time. After this, he became extremely successful and continued to paint genre scenes until the end of his life, when he returned to portraiture until his death in 1906 (source: National Gallery of Art). Note: This portrait is believed to depict an associate of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Eastman Johnson was commissioned by Longfellow to produce a series of portraits of the Mutual Admiration Society, a group of writers who spent time with Longfellow editing each others works, as well as his two sisters in 1846. The known portraits include Charles Sumner, Cornelius Conway Felton, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, as well as his sister Mary Longfellow Greenleaf. All of the portraits show heavy resemblance in their medium: charcoal and crayon, style: bust portrait, time period and clothing: circa 1840 according to the bow tie and stiff collar, and what appears to be the exact same gilt wood frames. It is believed this portrait could be of another close friend or family member of Longfellow's and was separated from the group currently housed at the Longfellow House in Massachusetts. Note: Eugenia Harrod was married to Major Benjamin Morgan Harrod who was the brother of Susan Dayton Harrod. Susan Dayton Harrod married Major William Boyd and their son Charles Harrod Boyd married Annette M. Dearborn. Provenance: The Estate of Charles Boyd Coleman, Jr., Chattanooga, TN. Descended in the family of Annette Maria Dearborn Boyd, daughter of Greenleaf Dearborn (1786-1846) and great granddaughter of Henry Dearborn (1751-1829) on the side of her mother, Pamela Augusta Gilman (1802-1880). Annette was married to Charles Harrod Boyd and had four children, including Julia Wingate Boyd (wife of Lewis M. Coleman, Jr.). Lewis M. Coleman, Jr. was the son of CSA Lt. Colonel Lewis M. Coleman and Mary Ambler Marshall, granddaughter of John Marshall (1755-1835), fourth Chief Justice of the United States, and Secretary of State under John Adams (1800-1801).
Condition:
Overall good condition. Foxing spots, areas of toning/acid burn, surface of drawing. Some waviness to paper. Several areas of loss, largest 2 inches, cracks, to frame.
- PAIR BERNARD DE CLAVIERE O/B PAINTINGS,
PAIR BERNARD DE CLAVIERE O/B PAINTINGS, DOG AND CATTwo (2) Bernard De Claviere (France/Tennessee, 1934-2016) oil on board paintings, one (1) depicting a dog, possibly a Briard, lying down; and one (1) depicting a Balinese or long-haired Siamese cat seated, both depicted against a landscape background. Both signed "B. de Claviere" in lower corners. Additionally signed, numbered 982 and 983, and dated "-06" en verso. Both housed in stained wood frames with bead-course decoration and a stepped filet. Sights: 10 1/2" H x 13 1/2" W. Frames: 15 1/2" H x 18 1/4" W. Biographical Note: Born in Lyon, France, Bernard De Claviere worked in a public relations role in Paris before embarking on a career as an animal painter specializing in horses. During a trip to America, his work was well received by J. T. Lundy, the owner of Lexington, Kentucky's Calumet Farms, a thoroughbred breeding and racing facility. De Claviere was engaged by Lundy to create portraits of a number of Kentucky stallions and mares. In 1978, de Claviere met Nashville's Guilford Dudley, former ambassador to Denmark, with whom he struck up a friendship based on their mutual interests in horses and hunting. After receiving portrait commissions from several Nashvillians, the artist began to commute between Nashville and Europe, staying in each place six months at a time. He eventually moved to New York City, where he lived from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. In 2002, the artist settled permanently in Nashville, where he worked until his death in 2016. (Adapted from Mary Unobsky, Nashville Arts Magazine, June 2010)

- AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS (1848-1907) BRONZE
AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS (1848-1907) BRONZE PORTRAIT, ROB...Framed Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) bronze tondo portrait of Robert Louis Stevenson. Inscription begins, "Youth Now Flees on Feathered Foot…." At lower center, "Copyright by Augustus Saint Gaudens". Circa 1893. Partial D.B. Butler & Co label verso, (New York framers). Dimensions: (bronze) 17.75" diameter; (framed) 26.5"h x 24.5"w. Provenance: Estate of William B. Ruger, Jr.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Augustus Saint-Gaudens became one of the more famous American sculptors of the late 19th century and was associated with a period called The Gilded Age. He brought the Beaux Arts style to America, as he had studied in Italy and France. A work for which he is particularly known is the monumental statue "Diana," a gilded copper weathervane for the top of the Madison Square Garden Tower in New York City. In 1875, he returned to New York and worked for Tiffany Studios and became part of a team of artists who did decoration in Boston for Trinity Church, designed by H.H. Richardson. Impressed by Robert Louis Stevenson’s collection of stories "New Arabian Nights" (1882), Saint-Gaudens told their mutual friend, Will Low, that he would be honored to model a portrait if the writer were ever to come to the United States. The opportunity presented itself in 1887–88, when Stevenson (1850–1894) sat for the sculptor in New York and later in Manasquan, New Jersey. Stevenson, suffering from tuberculosis, is shown writing in bed, as was his custom. The lengthy inscription is a poem by Stevenson dedicated to Low and published in 1887, "Underwood". The portrait became Saint-Gaudens’s most popular relief and was produced in three diameters as well as in rectangular variants.

- LARGE ARCHIVE OF FAUCETT ROSS-FRANK
LARGE ARCHIVE OF FAUCETT ROSS-FRANK CSURI CORRESPONDENC...Ross, Faucett. Large Archive of Faucett Ross-Frank Csuri Correspondence. Spanning 1961-75, Ross's letters cover wide-ranging topics, from his opinions and routines/handlings for various magic tricks ("The [Paul Fox] Candy Bowl to me is one of the most valuable props extant"), to Csuri's famous underground notebooks, to their mutual acquaintances, namely Charlie Miler, Dai Vernon, John Braun, T. Nelson Downs (Ross describes receiving Downs' "suitcase show," coin wand, and top hat as a gift), and other well-known magicians. Also included is a handwritten 13-page prospectus for an unrealized Vernon/Ross collaboration, a book on gambling artifice broken into five programs ("It should be made clear that Mr. Vernon's purpose is not to teach one to become a cheater, but rather to educate [the] public so that it may be protectedÉ"). Other tantalizing passages include lines such as "Finally got the low down on "Revelations": apparently Jay Marshall is going to publishÉ" "Éhere is an item to add to your Vernon bibliographyÉ" and "Charlie [Miller] doesn't appear concerned about his forthcoming trialÉadmits he's probably guilty." Many of the letters deal with Vernon, his magic, and his doings, as Ross was instrumental in Csuri's recording of Vernon secrets and routines from correspondence. Many original mailing covers and one photograph of Vernon included. Approximately 100 letters spanning some 200 pages, most filled front-and-back, neatly organized.
