Brown travelled to France to study old master paintings where Emile Lambinet influenced his paintings, but the Barbizon painters Corot an Daubigney would continue to have a lasting effect on his works. In 1875, Brown became friends with J. Foxcroft Cole and William Morris Hunt, two Barbizon painters, after returning to the United States.
