NAZCA POLYCHROME VESSEL MYTHICAL
NAZCA POLYCHROME VESSEL MYTHICAL BEINGS & TROPHY HEADSPre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 BCE to 700 CE. An exemplary hand-built pottery vessel intricately painted with mythical beings and trophy heads. The body rests on a rounded base with gently carinated sides, a broad shoulder, and a flattened top with a pair of spouts and strap handle. Nearly the entire surface is painted with a register of trophy heads below 2 stylized Anthropomorphic Mythical Beings, also referred to as AMB, flying about the upper shoulder in hues of russet red, black, brown, and gray atop a cream ground. Size: 7.96" Diameter x 8.5" H (20.2 cm x 21.6 cm)
"Anthropomorphic Mythical Beings" can be interpreted as underworld deities or demons; often comprised of spiraling tails, trophy heads, and leering humanoid yet feline-esque or animalistic features. Often, they hold trophy heads or weapons - here their clawed hands both hold clubs. The taking and displaying of heads from battle was a common activity among ancient Peruvian cultures, and might seem macabre to us, but represented strength and fighting prowess. The heads were often worn on belts as ornamentation or displayed in the homes of the victor.
