[Civil War - Archive] Lt. A.W.
[Civil War - Archive] Lt. A.W. Hayes 6th New Hampshire Infantry Civil War Letters Lot of 3 including a 3pp letter dated May 12 1862 at Camp Stanton Roanoke Island NC a 3.5pp letter dated July 6 1862 at Falmouth VA and a 3pp letter dated June 18 1863 at a camp near Vicksburg MS. All are signed by Lt. A.W. Hayes 6th New Hampshire Infantry and all are addressed to Sister Angie. In the first letter Hayes states his boredom with Camp Stanton ...now Norfolk is taken their is no need of guarding this island I expect Burnside will make a move up into the state if he does we shall probably go I hope so for I am getting tired of staying here as he is anxious to see some action due to his mistaken belief that the war is coming to an end The war looks now as if it was not going to last long we get good news every day we hear today that Richmond is taken I don't know how correct that is it looks as if we should be at home by next winter. He also thanks his sister for the apples sugar and jelly she sent him which he baked and delivered to the camp hospital and tells her to tell their brother to expect a package containing a gun and a box of shells which he took from a rebel.
