Lacking kozuka (small knife), blade with some corrosion, grime, several nicks on cutting edge, separations to hilt and scabbard, losses to lacquer, hilt missing two 3/4 x 1-1/4 in. pieces. JAPANESE KATANA WITH SHINSA PAPERS JapanC. 1661-73Blade attributed to Echizen Seki (1661-73), brown tape-wrapped shagreen grip, a menuki on each side with chrysanthemums, brass tsuba, gold washed habaki, steel blade, shagreen-wrapped wooden scabbard with naval gunto mounts, and Shinsa worksheet/papers for the sword. Note: Surrendered by a Japanese naval officer on board the Battleship Nagato on August 30, 1945, to U.S.M.C. Lt. Harry Savage. Savage was a member of Task Force 31, Tokyo Bay Occupation Force TF-31. He participated in the initial landing at Tokyo Bay and was part of the boarding party to receive the surrender of HIJMS Nagato, the last Axis Battleship still afloat to surrender to the Allies in Tokyo Bay. The sword stayed in the family until Lt. Savage passed away.

Equally the koshirae include a number of interesting tsuba and small fittings which are worthy of further study and preservation.
