A Chinese "Nanking Cargo" Blue
A Chinese "Nanking Cargo" Blue and White Porcelain Bowl c. 1750 the exterior sides painted with a continuous landscape scene comprised of rocks and trees base with a Christie's Amsterdam lot label designating this bowl as lot 3014 from the 1986 "The Nanking Cargo" auction height 3 1/4 in. diameter 7 1/2 in. wood stand. Note: In 1751 while on its way back to The Netherlands with cargo of Chinese goods loaded in Canton the Geldermalsen hit a reef and sank in the South China Sea. In 1986 much of the cargo was salvaged by Captain Michael Hatcher and subsequently sold at Christie's Amsterdam as "The Nanking Cargo" a term derived from 18th century auctions in which porcelain similar to the example above were sold as "Nanking ware".

PHOTOS OF COLONEL PINGER TRAVELS AND LINCHENG OUTRAGEChina/Japan, 1923, comprising: 83 black and white photos, 75 depicting the travels of Roland and Miriam Pinger and their two young sons, Roland Jr. and Edward throughout China and Japan, eight depicting the Lincheng Outrage and subsequent kidnapping of the Pinger family on May 6, 1923; 75 images depict various locations including the Forbidden City, Hong Kong, the Great Wall of China, Summer Palace, Ming tombs, Mukden and Kyoto, Japan, some with notes to verso, various sizes, one stamped "Copyright Photograph by Mactavish & Co., Ltd. Shanghai", largest 5 x 3-1/4 in.; seven images depict scenes from the Lincheng Outrage, including the derailed train and one portrait of Colonel Pinger at Pautzeku boiling dishes in the bandit camp, notes to verso, largest 4-1/2 x 3-1/8 in.

Lincheng Outrage: On May 6, 1923, twelve hundred bandits, mostly former soldiers under General Zhang Jingyao, led by Sun Meiyao derailed and attacked the "Blue Express" near the town of Lincheng on the Tianjin-Pukou Railway in Shandong Province. The bandits looted the train and killed a number of passengers. They took over 200 passengers hostage, including 25 westerners, most of whom were Americans. The hostages were forced on a ten day march to the bandits' mountain base at Pautzeku and were released after 37 days.

Chinese Nanyang School early 20th c. a "pokerwork" or pyrography album consisting of twelve double sheet landscape and bird-and-flower roundels each sealed inscribed in interior "gift of Hugh W Hubbard/ 3 December 1928" above the Benjamin March collector's seal each double sheet 9 3/4 in. x 11 1/2 in. silk bound cover sealed further paper cover bearing instructions: "Suggest this be offered to Dept. of Prints & Drawings. Museum of Art"; accompanied by a typed letter dated April 16 1929 from Benjamin March to Ralph M. Chait stating in part: "This album was given to me by a friend and I know absolutely nothing about the history or practice of the art as this example and yours are the only pieces of the kind I have ever seen"; together with Turn to the East by Caroline Singer and Cyrus Le Roy Baldridge Minton Balch & Company New York 1926. Provenance: With Benjamin Franklin March Jr. (1899-1934) Curator of Asiatic Art Detroit Institute of Arts (1927-1931); thence by descent in his family.

Important Chinese Tianhuang Seal of Jiang Kong YinThis was one of the personal seals of Canton's famous Jiang Kong Yin (1864-1952) finely carved Tianhuang dragon seal the stone of a rich brown caramel color well carved as a Chinese dragon spitting out a pearl and resting atop a square base incised with the ''Jia Shen'' date (1944) and signed Kong Yin the face of the seal carved with four characters reading ''shi qing hua yi'' translated to ''poems have feelings and paintings have souls.'' measures 2.75''H circa 1940's.Provence: Purchased in the 1970's in Hong Kong by the consignor's grandfather from the nephew of one of the late Jiang Kong Yin's wives or concubines. Jiang Kong Yin was a student of Kang You Wei (1858-1927) and was addressed as ''Tai Shi'' (achieved the rank of ''er jia jin shi'' at the last Imperial examination ''ke ju dian shi'' of the late Qing dynasty). Jiang was selected by the Qing court for the official position ''shu Ji shi'' and attended the Imperial College ''han lin''. Jiang was an active politician during the late Qing and Early Republic of China period. In 1911 after the March 29 Guangzhou Uprising failed Jiang offered assistance on fundraising for the burial of the bodies of 72 young revolutionaries in Huang Hua Gang (as inscribed on one of the tablets at Huang Hua Gang Commemoration Park in Guangzhou). After that Dr. Sun Yat Sen and his wife Soong Ching Ling Made a special trip to meet Jiang and thank him for his assistance. Jiang was also a prominent scholar and author a well known foodie(food tasting expert) and best known for being the recipe creator fo the ''Tai Shi Snake Soup''.Property of a Palm Springs Florida Gentleman.
