- Rare and Important American Gothic Revival
Rare and Important American Gothic Revival Oak Hall Chair, possibly New Orleans or New York, mid-19th century, the tall back supported by pierced and carved stiles terminating in crocketed spires, the central pierced and carved splat with an additional carved spire, the solid plank seat with molded edge hinged along the back edge and opening to a void cavity, supported by pierced front legs, h. 71\". This chair belongs to a small but important group of furniture associated with the Antebellum South. Related chairs have been found in Vicksburg, New Orleans, and most notably Stanton Hall Plantation in Natchez, Mississippi. It has been suggested that New Orleans may have been the source of this body of furniture since the Stanton Hall examples were invoiced by Henry Siebrecht of New Orleans. Related examples are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Bybee Collection, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Henry Francis duPont Winterthur Museum and the New Orleans Museum of Art. A mate to the Winterthur chair sold at New Orleans Auction Galleries in March, 1998, for $40,700, and another sidechair in March, 2000, for $56,000. The New Orleans Auction St. Charles Gallery sold the matching recamier in April, 1998, for $44,000.

Provenance: Homewood, Natchez, Mississippi. Homewood was built by David Hunt, a wealthy planter and businessman in Adams County, Mississippi. He built this palatial home as a wedding gift to his daughter and named it \"Homewood\". The house took five years to construct and was completed in 1860. The house burned to the ground in 1947. This lot is accompanied by two hand-written letters, ca. 1865, discussing the fate of these chairs and other furniture, as well as, a framed image of \"Homewood\" before it burned. Natchez June 2, 1865 Maj. Gen. Davidson General, I would respectfully ask attention to the following application - My wife is the aunt of Mr. W. T. Martin, a loyal resident of Adams County, Miss. She took charge of & raised Mr. Martin from his infancy. In January, 1854, she married William T. Martin lately in the confederate service. She became entitled by the will of his father, the late William C. Conner to separate property mainly in cash of the value of about $30,000. In 1854 his mother deeded to her a piece of land about 1-1/2 miles from the city of Natchez. Upon which her husband, for the most part with her means, erected & furnished a dwelling house and highly improved the place. In July, 1863, the U.S. forces occupied Natchez. Mrs. Martin was driven from her home by the violence & insults of Federal officers & soldiers (on picket duty in front of her house) & of her own servants accompanied by soldiers. There was no white males in the place except for her infant son. Her family consisted of five small children. The elder eight years old. She moved her family & most of her furniture to her mother?s place, adjoining her own. About the 1st of March 1864, the Provost Marshall, an officer whose name was Walker, came with Col. Wallace of the 4th Union Cavalry & some soldiers & took away part of her furniture. A few days afterwords other officers & soldiers carried off more. & but for the active influence of myself would have left Mrs. Martin & family without a bed of her own to sleep on. The object of taking the furniture was stated by the officers to be to furnish the quarters of some of the officers of the U.S. Army. When the first seizure of furniture was made, Mrs. Martin informed the officers making it that the furniture was her property & not her husband?s. & her mother Mrs. Conner called immediately upon the Commandant of the Post Col. Johnson, & informed him that the furniture was her daughter?s & not Gen. Martin?s & he told him it was taken with his approbation, & he could take any furniture in Natchez. Lt. Park?s assistant Provost Marshall took away part of the furniture. Mrs. Martin by the laws of Mississippi is entitled to hold real & personal property separately from her husband, and not subject to his debts or default. Her residence and this furniture were so held. This furniture was purchased with her means & her husband, I am informed, could not legally sell it without her consent. She is now deprived of her home & the means of furnishing another. A list of the furniture taken from her is here with furnished. Some part of it is in the hands of Col. Wallace who is in Natchez - some in possession of Capt. Peres Q. M. As I have reason to believe- none of it is recorded in or in the possession of the Treasury agency here. So far as I know the U.S. Government has never been benefitted one dollar by this unauthorized seizure of a non-combatant?s property - Property too, not fit for military uses. In Mrs. Martin?s behalf, I respectfully ask that a strict investigation may be made into the conduct of the officers seizing this furniture & that they may be required to return it & compensate the owner for its use & any damage it may have sustained. I ask this the more confidently because I believe the present commanding officers here will not permit acts of injustice or violence on the part of soldiers or officers, towards defenseless women & children - or their property - Respectfully Submitted Spencer Wood and Dr. Wood, The furniture I received from the Pro. Marshal & A.Q.M.in the early part of last year, among which were a few articles belonging to Genl. Martin C.S.A. was turned over to the A.Q.M. in the fore part of Aug. last. Except some that were delivered to Dr. Luce and adjt. Cregs 4th Union Cav. The adjt. turned over what he got to the A.Q.M. In Oct. last. and I believe the Dr. turned over what he got to Major Muciple and by the Major to Capt. Mersinun and by him to the Treasury Dept. That is all I can learn about the articles except the following which are now in the house where I live. (1) one cottage bedstead (1) marble top washstand (1) card table (2) two chairs - for these I am responsible to the Treasury Dept. Very Respectfully Mr. M Wallace Natchez Miss May 26th 1865

- PR. RALPH E. EARL PORTRAITS, HARDY CRYER
PR. RALPH E. EARL PORTRAITS, HARDY CRYER AND WIFEPair of Tennessee portraits by Ralph Eleaser Whiteside Earl (1788 - 1838) depicting the Reverend Hardy Murfree Cryer (b. 1792--1846), in dark coat with ruffled collar, and a woman believed to be his first wife Elizabeth Rice Cryer (b. 1793--1832) in black mourning dress with white lace collar and cap. Housed in black and gilt wooden frames. Both portraits measure 26 1/2" H x 21 1/2" W sight; 33" H x 28 1/2" W framed. Circa 1830. Provenance: Descended in subject's family to current consignor. Biography ( Courtesy of James C. Kelly, Virginia Historical Society, Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture, 1998): Ralph E. W. Earl was the son of Connecticut painter Ralph Earl (1751-1801). Earl studied under his father in Northhampton, Massachusetts, before traveling to London in 1809 to study under Benjamin West and John Trumbull. In 1817, Earl arrived in Nashville to paint General Andrew Jackson, the hero of the battle of New Orleans. Later that year, in Natchez, he met and married Jane Caffrey, Rachel Jackson's niece. She died the next year, but Earl moved into the Hermitage would from then on remain in Jackson's circle, accompanying the newly elected president to Washington. During the next eight years, Earl turned out numerous paintings of Jackson. Politicians, especially Democrats, knew it "did not hurt to order a portrait of General Jackson from Earl." He painted many of Jackson's friends and a few of his foes. Earl returned to the Hermitage with Jackson in 1837 and died there in September 1838. Rev. Cryer was a close friend of Andrew Jackson who spent time at the Hermitage. According to the book "The Making the American Thoroughbred" (see book, also offered in this auction), Cryer was born in North Carolina in 1792, married Elizabeth Rice in 1812, was a member of the Tennessee Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church 1813-1816, and served one year on the Nashville district. "After withdrawing from the itinerant ranks, he served as a "local" preacher and continued to exercise the offices of a minister the remainder of his life. His many contributions to The Turf Register and The Spirit of the Times are rich in Biblical and classical allusions, after the style of that day; show much force and originality; and amply support the statement of McFerrin that he was of an ardent temperament and had a brilliant mind. His ardor distinguished him as a breeder no less than as a preacher. He kept more thorougbred stallions than any man of his time, except, perhaps, Thomas Alderson; owned a few blood mares; and took a great interest in turf sports." The book quotes stud books kept by Cryer which show that "Cryer's horses were patronized by practically all the prominent breeders and turfmen named heretofore in this volume, from Andrew Jackson and John Catron, down". Cryer's passion for horses seems to have gotten him into trouble only once with his church; he was charged with horse racing and summoned to a trial before a church tribunal. "The proof was clear and conclusive," wrote J.R. Hubbard in The Spirit of the Times, "but the evidence showed that the horse was raced in the name of Col. George Elliott, and that this gentleman owned one half of him." In Cryer's defense, he told the judge: "I would like for you to let me know how I can arrange it for my half of the horse to stand in the stable while Col. Elliott's half is racing." He was acquitted. Click here to view documents containing Andrew Jackson and Reverend Hardy Murfree Cryer correspondence.

OIL MARINE PAINTING, STEAMBOAT J.M. WHITE, SIGNED MATT ...Matt Thomas (United Kingdom, 20th century) oil on canvas marine painting depicting the famed and ill-fated steamship "J.M. White" sailing in a large body of water, with other ships and a port city in the background. Signed lower right. Housed in a wide molded giltwood frame. Sight: 24" H x 36" W. Framed: 33" H x 45" W. Last half 20th century. Note: Known as "the Mistress of the Mississippi," The "J.M. White" steamboat was known as the mightiest and most luxurious steamboat of its day. The boat was the masterpiece of her builder, the Howard Shipyard of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and it was named for Capt. J.M. White (1823-1880) of Cloverport, Kentucky. Owned by Greenville & New Orleans Packet Company, the sidewheeler carried both cotton and passengers along a New Orleans-Vicksburg-Greenville trade route, and also earned fame for setting a new speed record of seven hours between New Orleans and Baton Rouge during a race with The Natchez steamship. The ship came to a tragic end in 1888 while docked at Blue Store Landing in Louisiana. Fire broke out onboard and gunpowder stowed in the hold exploded, killing a reported 28 people. The exact cause of the blaze has never been determined, and the boat's wreckage remains at the bottom of the Mississippi River. (Source: The Waterways Journal Weekly, Jan. 17, 2021)
