P. FRANKLIN BROWNELL, RCA (1857-1946) CANADIANPeleg Franklin Brownell, "Nature morte aux pivoines", oil on canvas (relined), 18 x 26 inches. Signed verso: titled on the Galerie d’Art Vincent label, and on the Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc. 2007 Retrospective Exhibition label, catalogue #42. Provenance: Ottawa Collection. Catalogue note: Pridham's is pleased to offer an extensive collection of works by iconic Canadian artist Peleg Franklin Brownell RCA, OSA (1857-1946). Brownell began his studies in Boston at Tufts School of the Museum of Fine arts and then at the Académie Julian in Paris in the later part of the 19th century. There he met fellow ex-pat William Brymner. Brownell eventually moved to Ottawa in 1886, taking up the position of Head Master of the Ottawa School of Art until 1900, subsequently becoming the Head Master of the Women's Art Association in Ottawa. Elected as a Member of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1885, and Ontario Society of Artists in 1899. In 1907, he became a founding member of the Canadian Art Club in Toronto where he befriended the likes of Maurice Cullen and James Wilson Morrice. As a result, his palette began to soften, leaning strongly towards an impressionistic style. This style is evident in many of the examples we are pleased to offer within this sale.
