NAZCA POLYCHROME POTTERY BOWL W/ ABSTRACT FACEPre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of shallow form with a round but stable base, squat walls, and a thick rim. The exterior surfaces are decorated with beige and tan hues as well as quartets of diagonal stripes in alternating russet and black hues. The interior surfaces are decorated with burgundy, burnt ochre, and black serrations surrounding the rim as well as a white-ground basin surface upon which a large and abstract head - replete with enormous eyes, 2 snake-like tongues, and serpentine hair tendrils - is presented. Size: 6.25" W x 1.75" H (15.9 cm x 4.4 cm)

NAZCA POTTERY TROPHY HEAD JAR + CHIMU POTTERY JARPre-Columbian, South Coast of Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE; Central Coast of Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A nice set of 2 hand-built pottery vessels from ancient Peru. First is a petite Nazca vessel covered in tan, red, black, maroon, orange, and white pigments to form the stylized visage of a trophy head. The head features large, almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose that protrudes from the side walls, and full lips, all beneath a crosshatched head wrap. The larger Chimu vessel features a flat-bottomed, apple-shaped body with a central cylindrical spout and a slender strap handle on the verso. Incised on the body are 7 rectangular panels, each containing an abstract rabbit-eared figure with lengthy arms; some of the panels are inverted and look reminiscent of an abstract mouse. Size (Nazca jar): 3.2" W x 3.125" H (8.1 cm x 7.9 cm); (Chimu jar): 4.36" Diameter x 6.2" H (11.1 cm x 15.7 cm)

Condition:
Nazca vessel repaired from 2 large pieces, with light adhesive residue along break lines; Chimu vessel is intact and very good. Both vessels have minor abrasions and a few small spalls commensurate with age, with minimal fading to pigments on Nazca vessel, and light encrustations. Great preservation to trophy head motif on Nazca vessel and incised decorations on Chimu vessel.

Adorning the top of the walls is a register of dense crosshatching filled with miniscule stippling. Swirling across the main body are several abstract saurian creatures, each bearing large eyes and either red- or cream-hued bodies outlined in black. Size: 4.2" Diameter x 3.4" H (10.7 cm x 8.6 cm)

NAZCA POLYCHROME KERO BOWL W/ MYTHOLOGICAL BEINGSPre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 300 to 600 CE. A hand-built pottery kero or bowl of a broad form resting on a rounded but stable base with slanted walls, and a deep basin with stone-burnished surfaces and a uniform brick-red hue. The exterior is an amazing polychrome painting of the popular “Anthropomorphic Mythical Beings” that can be interpreted as underworld deities or demons; comprised of spiraling tails and leering humanoid yet feline-esque heads that extend a barb-shaped tongue between their paws. All is painted is slip painted in warm earthen tones of red, brown, tan, white, and black. These pigments were often made with minerals like hematite, limonite, and magnetite, as well as white kaolin clay, and applied with brushes made from llama and alpaca fur, and then given black outlines. A lovely example of these enigmatic beings! Size: 5.75" Diameter x 4.5" H (14.6 cm x 11.4 cm)

A hand-built pottery vessel adorned with a vibrantly painted and fierce "Anthropomorphic Mythical Being / AMB." The bowl rests on a rounded but stable base, with a deep basin and wide, flared rim. The exterior shoulder and neck surface is slipped in a creamy white ground while the base and interior lip has a deep umber-brown hue. The deity encircles the body twice, painted in hues of maroon, tan, russet, black, gray, and brown. His head is humanoid with a protruding tongue and multicolored stripes, and broad headdress. His hunched body has a slender curled tail and feather like spines protruding along the spine. "Anthropomorphic Mythical Beings" can be interpreted as underworld deities or demons; often comprised of spiraling tails, trophy heads, and leering humanoid yet feline-esque or animalistic features. A wonderful and bold example! Size: 6.25" Diameter x 4.125" H (15.9 cm x 10.5 cm)
