Two volumes in one hardbound in green cloth with gilt banding on cover and black printed text on cover spine with gilt lettering. Engraved portrait frontispiece of the author with tissue guard. vol one 481 pp second volume 611 pp. George Washington Williams was a soldier a minister a journalist a politician and a historian. He is best known for his political and historical writings. His most famous work was History of the Negro Race in America 1618-1880. Most of his works focused on race politics or war tactics. Williams was also the first African-American to be appointed to the Ohio State Legislature.

Of this work and the two accompanying works ( The Serpent and Elemental Forces ), Bill Morgan offered the following commentary: "In this period of his life (early 20s), Nicolas sometimes felt he was being pursued by sinister forces he tried to confront through his art."
Presented behind glass in a wooden frame that measures 16" x 13".
Provenance : From the Bill & Ellen Morgan collection. Bill Morgan is a professor emeritus of English at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. It was there that he befriended Nicolas Africano, and he quickly became a patron and collector of the Africano's work as well; for a time Morgan rented Africano a room, occasionally accepting artwork in lieu of payment. This far-reaching collection from an early adopter gives a unique opportunity to access rare early works and get an expansive view of the artist during several pivotal moments in his journey.
