TWO MEISSEN POLYCHROME PAINTED PORCELAIN FIGURES, UNDER...TWO MEISSEN POLYCHROME PAINTED PORCELAIN FIGURES, UNDERGLAZE AND INCISED MARKS, 19TH/20TH CENTURY, one modeled as the classically draped Nereid water nymph Amphitrite, as she prepares to bathe with one foot raised on a vine encrusted tree trunk and the other standing on an oval base, trimmed in raised Vitruvian scrolls above a concave frieze with groups of dolphins and marsh willows flanking gilt tridents, verso underglaze blue crossed swords mark, cursive incised "M.193," impressed "50," height: 14 1/2"; a small figure of an 18th century fruit vendor youth, wearing period attire and partially resting on a tree trunk, while holding an apples and plums filled basket, verso underglaze blue crossed swords mark, overglaze red "19," cursive incised "5," and impressed "145," height: 5 1/4".
Condition:
Each are in good to very good condition and have normal light gilding wear. Amphitrite has a scratch on her left shoulder, some expected chipped leaves on the vines and surface buildup throughout but otherwise is in good shape. The fruit vendor has a chipped leaf amidst the fruit and is lacking a handle on the basket. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder. Meissen porcelain partial figure group of Neptune and Thetis late 19th century, after a model by j.j. kandler Modeled as Thetis being borne away on scrolling waves behind a pair of hippocampi while a triton sounds a horn and a dolphin spews water beneath her, on a shaped and molded base, underglaze blue crossed swords mark. NOTE: The present lot represents just under one half of a large and impressive figure group titled 'Neptune & Thetis' depicting a standing Neptune attended by sea nymphs and tritons and accompanied by the nereid Thetis as they are pulled across the sea by a pair of hippocampi. Large figure groups were often modeled in several smaller components which could be assembled after their initial firing. A complete version of this figure group sold Christie's, October 25, 2007, sale xxx . H: 10, L: 15 in.
