- 1792 ARREST WARRANT FOR MURDER, NYC
1792 ARREST WARRANT FOR MURDER, NYC MAYORHandwritten warrant (it appears to be) for the arrest of Abigail Bloodgood for the murder of her baby, signed by New York City mayor Richard Varick on October 5, 1792. (During the Revolutionary War, Varick served as George Washington's aide-de-camp and private secretary.) Reads, in part: "By Richard Varick, mayor of the City of New York, to the sheriff and constables and marshals of the said city ... whereas by an inquest ... Abigail Bloodgood stand charged with .. suspicion of having been principals ... to the murder of a new born infant, born of the body of the said Abigail Bloodgood ... apprehend .. forthwith bring before me to answer ... further to be dealt with according to law." Measures 8-1/2" x 13" (open).
Provenance: Obtained directly from a collection of historical paper items -- from the Ashfield, Skaats and McNeal families of New York -- none of which has ever been offered for sale. Several lots of these papers, including historically important pieces, are being offered in today's auction. The family, represented in several of the items in the collection, owned land directly adjacent to Wall Street, and some of the pieces refer to these parcels.
