SPACE SHUTTLE CREW PATCHES AND
SPACE SHUTTLE CREW PATCHES AND FLAGS, STS-1 AND STS-932 Framed Space Shuttle Columbia Crew Patches and Flags, with astronaut autographs. 1st item: Space Shuttle Columbia Crew Patch with embroidered insignia, and 12" x 7" Flag, flown on the first flight of the Space Shuttle, April 12-14, 1981, adhered to board with printed presentation inscription "to the Committee on Science and Technology, whose steadfast support of the Space Shuttle Program made the flight of the Columbia a reality." Autographed by John Young and Bob Crippen, with photographs of the shuttle taking off and landing and a NASA badge. Overall - 29" H x 24" W. 2nd item: Space Shuttle Columbia Crew Patch and 4 1/2" x 5 1/2" Flag, flown on the shuttle's mission to deploy the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, STS-93, July 23-27, 1999. Photograph of the Shuttle Crew, with autographs of Commander Eileen Collins and specialist Michael Tognini, along with printed versions of autographs by five crew members and three related photographs. Overall - 17 1/2" H x 21 1/2" W. History: "A new era in space flight began on April 12, 1981, when Space Shuttle Columbia, or STS-1, soared into orbit from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Astronaut John Young, a veteran of four previous spaceflights including a walk on the moon in 1972, commanded the mission. Navy test pilot Bob Crippen piloted the mission and would go on to command three future shuttle missions. The shuttle was humankind's first reusable spacecraft. Named after the first American ocean vessel to circle the globe and the command module for the Apollo 11 Moon landing, Columbia continued this heritage of intrepid exploration. Perhaps Columbia's crowning achievement was the deployment of the gleaming Chandra X-ray Observatory in July 1999. Carried into space inside the orbiter's payload bay, the slender and elegant Chandra telescope was released on July 23. Still in flight today, the X-ray telescope specializes in viewing deep space objects and finding the answers to astronomy's most fundamental questions. Columbia and its crew were tragically lost during STS-107. As the Space Shuttle lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 16, 2003, a small portion of foam broke away from the orange external fuel tank and struck the orbiter's left wing. The resulting damage created a hole in the wing's leading edge, which caused the vehicle to break apart during reentry to Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003." - source: excerpted from NASA.gov. Provenance: collection of a US Naval Officer, given to him as a gift. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)

HENNING, DOUG. THE MAGIC
HENNING, DOUG. THE MAGIC SHOW.[New York], 1974. Henning, in a top hat, is depicted at the center of the poster with a magic wand in one hand, and singing showgirls and a growling tiger beside him. Designed by DEB. 41 x 58". Repaired closed tears; B. Tony-nominated musical The Magic Show ushered in a new era of modern stage magic. Doug Henning, its star, dressed and acted without pretense or stiffness. He had a flower child-like innocence and wonder (and style of dress) that was at once relatable and endearing. It was this personal charm, combined with a strong choice of material, that helped catapult Henning to worldwide fame. The Magic Show ran for four and a half years on Broadway at the Cort Theatre.

THOMAS BRIGG & SONS WHANGEE
THOMAS BRIGG & SONS WHANGEE UMBRELLA-Ca. 1960 -Classic English umbrella with a sizeable whangee crook handle, a wood pole shaft, metal ferrule, U-shaped steel ribs and stretchers and a blackened brass, sliding runner. The probably refurbished canopy of the umbrella is made up of eight grayish-blue squared pattern silk with matching tie wrap and black steel popper and turned black steel rib tips. -All Brigg umbrellas were things of beauty, but this one is sleeker and more covetable than all the others that had gone before it. Any stylish gentleman was bound to want one, even if he had several Briggs already. -Anyhow, best British quality and repeatedly winners of coveted Design Council Awards, this umbrella obeys to long gone rigorous standards of production and also proves to that it was made to last. -H. 5 ¾” x 7”, O.L. 36” -$100-$200 -Published in the book “In Good Hands, 250 years of craftsmanship at, Swaine Adeny Brigg” by Katherine Prior, pages 120-121, this Brigg umbrella related story is worth two minutes reading. -“One gentleman’s umbrella in particular achieved world fame - this was Neville Chamberlain’s black silk which he took with him to talks with Adolf Hitler at Munich in September 1938. The world, holding its breath in hope of peace, looked on in amazement as photographs emerged of Chamberlain’s immaculately furled umbrella claiming a starring role in the proceedings. A few months later, in January 1939, the same umbrella twirled its way to Rome, when Chamberlain paid a visit to Benito Mussolini. Newspapers devoted column inches to this unlikely symbol of hope, with one or two of Brigg’s salesmen providing discreet insights into the great man’s brolly behaviour. Every few years, they reported, Chamberlain personally brought his umbrella into the St James’s shop to be recovered. While it was being examined, he would while away the minutes admiring and fondling the more flamboyant styles on display, but he was never tempted to buy another, and always ordered simply that his old one be recovered. According to Viscountess Elibank, his wife had given it to him in 1899 and he refused therefore to countenance its replacement. It was a heavy black silk affair, with a Malacca cane handle, seven-eighths of an inch thick, spliced onto a Tonkin cane shaft, with a gilt collar. One of Brigg’s insiders reported that it had originally cost £2 17s 6d, but that if the collar had been of solid gold the price would have been six guineas. It was smart but not showy. `It’s what one might call a Rolls-Royce of an umbrella,’ the insider added. ‘Natty but quiet; solid, but lighter, the sort of umbrella which becomes part of a man, if I may say so.’ The repair men recovered it each time, but they could not help but notice that it had not been opened since they had last ironed its hand-stitched gores into pristine pleats. Chamberlain had most recently brought it in just before he flew to Munich. This press reportage seemed to confirm Chamberlain’s reputation as a sober and restrained politician, not given to rash decisions. In the United States the fascination with Chamberlain’s prop prompted articles on the style and deportment of a true gentleman and kicked off a local revival in umbrellas and parasols. In July 1939 Life magazine devoted an article to the ‘umbrella of appeasement’, which was not yet a derogatory term for most people. For a few short months, umbrellas were no longer associated with soggy gloom, but were wielded in a spirit of hope and optimism. For his part, Hitler, who had resented being forced into a diplomatic conference of `equals’ at Munich, could barely contain his scorn for `umbrella politicians’. At the time all this fuss must have seemed like magnificent publicity for Brigg. Indeed, the shop men could not have spoken to the press without the blessing of Brigg’s management. But ultimately, of course, it was an ironic prelude to the ending of the company’s independence. A few months later, the war that Chamberlain had tried to avert erupted, and soon afterwards Brigg lost their Paris showroom. The merger of Thomas Brigg & Sons with Swaine & Adeney followed in February 1943. When the war was over, a new era of economic austerity and political levelling ensured that the art of making and selling quality umbrellas would never again be quite the same.”

JOHN SWATSLEY (B. 1937) "CHINA
JOHN SWATSLEY (B. 1937) "CHINA CLIPPER SEAPLANE"John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "China Clipper Ship - Seaplane" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting is the original painting which originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. (25cc) E Earth Rate Change booklet stamp issued March 22, 1988.
In 1935, one hundred years to the day after the first clipper ship had sailed into San Francisco Harbor, a new "China Clipper" marked a milestone in the delivery of U.S. mail. As thousands watched in awe, she headed west from San Francisco, flying just above the unfinished Golden Gate Bridge. A cheer went up as she set off on the first transpacific airmail flight with a cargo of 110,000 letters. The Martin M-130, christened "China Clipper," was a seaplane designed specifically for long-distance passenger and mail transport. Her body was made almost entirely of aluminum and her wings were high. Her journey would be eight thousand miles long, and special island bases had to be prepared to accommodate her landing needs. But, the task complete, the "China Clipper" opened a new era in mail transport and joined the ranks in an exciting new century of improved communications.

JOHN SWATSLEY (B 1937)
JOHN SWATSLEY (B 1937) "DORCHESTER LOCOMOTIVE" OILJohn Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "The Dorchester Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board painting.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting is the original painting which was on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Dorchester stamp issued March 10, 1983. The rugged Canadian Rockies ... and the vast, unexplored wilderness blanketed with thick forests and deep ravines ... were once cut only by wild tumbling rivers and an occasional town. Traveling across the untamed Canadian wilderness on horseback or on foot was a difficult ... and often dangerous journey. Many towns were isolated, and trade and communications were poor. However, in 1836, the beginning of a new era was born when a small stretch of track was carved into the land between Montreal and the Richelieu River -- saving ninety miles of river travel. The first railway in Canada -- the Champlain and St. Lawrence -- opened for business on July 21, 1836. Traveling along the stretch of tracks was the first steam locomotive in Canada ... the Dorchester ... built in England by Robert Stephanson & Company. Nicknamed the "Kitten," this magnificent steam engine was equipped with a long, thin smoke stack and an open cab where the engineers fed chopped wood into the glowing furnace. Several years later, the Dorchester was sold to the St. Lawrence & Industrie Railroad where she remained in service until 1864. A derailment and fiery boiler explosion caused irreparable damage, and Canada's first steam locomotive was destroyed. All that is left today of the famous Dorchester is her brass nameplate which was found by a farmer while plowing his field. He gave it to the College Museum of Joliette, Quebec, where it is now preserved and on display.

AMERICAN SCHOOL, 19TH CAmerican
AMERICAN SCHOOL, 19TH CAmerican School, 19th c ., "The Delta Queen", oil on canvas, unsigned, titled and inscribed en verso, 14 1/8 in. x 36 1/8 in., framed ?A stranger to this mode of travelling would find it difficult to describe his impressions upon descending the Mississippi for the first time in one of these steam boats?the fare is sumptuous and everything is in style of splendor, order, and regularity, far exceeding that of most city taverns.? -Timothy Flint, History and Geography of the Mississippi Valley, 1832/ An exciting body of work by a previously undocumented 19th century maritime artist specializing in the portraiture of paddlewheelers has recently been identified. These steamboats hold a special place in the history and culture of the South. Historically, they were the main commercial and transportation portal of the South via the Mississippi River, allowing people and goods to be connected with neighboring states previously isolated. Culturally, they embodied a new era of progress and luxury transportation prior to the interstate highway and rail systems. Powered by a steam engine and propelled with stern or side wheels, paddlewheelers were sometimes deemed ?floating palaces,? often drawing a crowd to the dock with their luxurious design and entertainment. Six paintings of paddllewheelers have been identified by the hand of this artist: the ?Eclipse,? ?Eleanora,? ?Fuegla,? ?New Orleans River Company Express,? ?Challenge,? and the ?Bayou Belle.? With the ?Delta Queen? and the aforementioned portraits, the artist works in a meticulous fashion with extreme attention to the details of the figures, railings, and ship accessories. The stylized renderings make this artist?s hand easy to identify, and the materials used and style of ship depicted dates this artist to roughly the 1870s. Ref.: Busch, Jason T., et al.
