Martin to be and appear before the Honorable District Court...to answer the complaint of Philippe A. Lubtett in a plea of debt for one hundred fifty dollars with compound interest with damage, three hundred dollars...Witness, C. Deen, Clerk of the District court-office in the town of San Augustine, this the 28th day of February one thousand eight hundred and forty and of the Texian Independence 4th year.," with San Augustine County Court seal and bellflower chain ends, verso court notes and records that all three defendants were notified, signed by Deputy T. Condition:
Some toning at one end, moisture exposure waving, yellowing and stains, tears and losses at edges, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age. Drexel Francis Martin [American/Pennsylvania 1792-1863] oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman the painting is signed under the relined canvas and is documented in an addition to the back of the painting. Purchased from the Estate of David Scull Bispham of Philadelphia in 1928. Drexel was a prominent 19th-century portrait painter whose painting career began in Europe continued in Philadelphia and in South America for an extended period of time.
