ROBERT ELLIS "NEW YORK ONE" PAINTINGROBERT ELLIS "NEW YORK ONE" PAINTING 1965Robert C. Ellis (American, 1923-1979). Oil on linen painting titled "New York One," depicting an abstract composition with a large yellow circle surrounded above and below by rectangular fields of orange-red, 1965. These two fields are bisected and framed by a deep blue.
Provenance: Distinguished Corporate Collection, Minnesota.
Ellis began studying art at The University of New Mexico, Taos Summer Field School in 1942. After serving in WWII he returned to his study of art at the New School of Social Research in New York in 1949 where he studied with Adja Yunkers and Abraham Rattner. The following year he returned to The University of New Mexico and earned his BFA in 1950. After marrying Rosamaria Ramirez de Alba, a Mexican citizen, he would split his time between the American Southwest and Mexico before finally settling in Taos in 1965. His earlier works moved through the Cubist and Abstract Expressionist movements before reaching a more minimalist influenced style in his later years. His works were exhibited at the Gump's Gallery in San Francisco, The Panhandle Museum in Texas, the Ellen Noel Art Museum of the Permian Basin in Texas, the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, and throughout the Southwest. He was also exhibited in Mexico at the Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno in Mexico City in 1964.
