French oil on canvas, depicts portrait of infant in cap, relined, paper labels applied to stretcher, including: temporary loan from Museum of Fine Arts (4430) and Fogg Art Museum (10610), also ownership labels, "Mrs. Charles B. Perkens…Mrs. Bruen, Newport, R.I.", condition consistent with age including craquelure, toning, wear to edges, and minor damages, loose from frame, ss: 16" h. x 12 1/4" w. [Painting was at the Fogg Art Museum from July 6, 1910 - December 14, 1911. It was registered as "Oil painting of a baby by Fragonard. (Attributed.)". Painting was received by the MFA on August 15, 1941 for examination. The Museum returned the painting to the owner on January 21, 1942. It was identified as "Portrait of little girl, by Unknown artist"]

POSTMORTEM DAGUERREOTYPE OF AN INFANT1/4 plate post mortem image of an infant in a white gown laying on dark and light blankets, possibly fur. Although the term "post mortem" has become overused in general, this image shows clear signs of indeed being part of this rare and highly sought after genre. The child shown in this quarter plate clearly shows withering of both hands and arms. Embossed case with floral pattern showing remnants of gilt around the edges, red velvet pad and diamond pattern mat. Image approx. 3-3/4" L x 2-3/4" H viewable, case approx. 4-5/8" L x 3-3/4" H. Paper hinge in poor condition, hook closures intact. This has not been removed from the case by our staff. See images for detail. This item can be shipped in-house.
