FOLLOWER OF JOHN CONSTABLE, 19TH CENTURY 17 ½" x 24" Stour Valley English countryside landscape with cottage on stream. Oil on cavnas, unsigned, framed in an antique gilded wood frame with John Constable nameplate, overall 26" x 32". Canvas stamped verso "Prepared by Winsor & Newton 38, Rathbone Place, London". Henry C. Newton (British, 1805-1882) was a painter and co-founder of the venerable artists' supply firm of Winsor & Newton. Newton was also a personal friend of John Constable. Winsor & Newton company history notes that, in 1832, Henry Newton's Rathbone Place residence "...was then part of an artists' quarter in which a number of eminent painters, including John Constable, had studios..." Provenance: Current owner acquired at an Akron, OH estate sale in 2007, which included English antiques.
