Exploration of the Nile tributaries
Exploration of the Nile tributaries of Abyssinia : the sources, supply, and overflow of the Nile : the country, people, customs, etc. interspersed with highly exciting adventures of the author among elephants, lions, buffaloes, hippopotami, rhinoceros, etc...by Sir Samuel White Baker. Hartford: O.D. Case & Co. 1868. First American edition. 8 vo. Hardback, maroon buckrum with gilt lettering on spine, numerous illustrations and fold out map. First American edition of this popular travel book published first in 1867 in London by MacMillan. Baker discovered new areas of both geography and societies of eastern Africa. Baker sailed up the Nile from Khartown in Dec. 1862 to meet Speke and Grant at Gondokoro (Juba), in Southern Sudan. In 1864, he followed the White Nile into what is now Uganda, and discovered Lake Albert. He writes extensively of big game hunting, esp. for elephants; and about the slave trade.

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH
MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902)
THE NILE AT LUXOR Inscribed with intitials, inscribed and dated 1879 on old label verso, oil on canvas11.5cm x 25.5cm (4.5in x 10in)Note: This work belongs to a series of studies Corbet painted while sailing up the Nile in the winter of 1878-9 and was perhaps given to Vereker and Lilian Hamilton, fellow students at the Slade. It was painted between 5:30 and 6 pm, which testifies the significance the artist placed on the immediate impression of a landscape. Stylistically, it displays affinity with the views on the Nile that Frederic Leighton painted in 1868, which likely stems from the fact that Corbet had been sketching with Leighton and Giovanni Costa in Perugia only a few months before his trip to Egypt. The study is equally reminiscent, particularly in the bluish hue of the mountains, of the Extensive View of the Nile painted most likely in 1888 by George Howard (Castle Howard, Yorkshire), 9th Earl of Carlisle and a close associate of both Costa and Leighton.Discover more about the landscapes of Leighton and Corbet by clicking below to read a fascinating introduction by art historian Pola Durajska. ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FIGURE OF OSIRIS
ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FIGURE OF OSIRIS
EGYPT, LATE PERIOD, 664 - 332 B.C. bronze, gold and lapis lazuli, standing deity in typical mummiform pose, holding a crook and flail in his crossed hands, wearing the atefcrown with frontal uraeus and incised plaited false beard, the face with inlaid quartz eyes and lapis brows, raised on a bespoke mount20.2cm tallPrivate family collection, Switzerland, since at least 1940, the piece is accompanied by a supporting letter confirming the provenance.Note:Osiris is most often represented as a shrouded mummy, emphasizing his connection with the dead. He holds a flail and a short shepherd’s crook, insignia associated with Egyptian kingship, and wears a long, braided beard, emblematic of divinity. On the front of his tall crown is a uraeus, a cobra ready to spit fire at his enemies. The horns may link him with the sun god, who often appears as a ram-headed man at the end of the day and during the night.By the first millennium B.C., statues and statuettes of Osiris were offered in profusion, reflecting both the importance of the god and a shift in how the ancient Egyptians performed certain rituals. Some of the places where statues of Osiris have been found can be identified as temples and shrines belonging to him, but they have also been found as offerings in contexts where explanations are not evident.
