TAINO ZEMI, SIMILAR TO THOSE
TAINO ZEMI, SIMILAR TO THOSE PORTRAYING THE GODYucahu, but with a different demeanor. Pre-Columbian. This example is less severe, with a subtle grin. Arms extend forward from the headband, and legs point toward the back. Rare to see a zemi with arms and legs, it is also relatively thin. Base is concave, pecked and polished. Fine grained stone. There is a flaw in the stone at the back of the cone that is a natural feature of the rock. 6 1/2" long. Dominican Republic. Provenance: Carrada Collection, Miami and NYC. Bamana or Marka N'tomo Mask Mali
Bamana or Marka N'tomo Mask Mali Carved wood mask with applied metal three applied tubes flattened with remnants of red cotton tassels. Elongated forehead with two horns over a rigid nose and small protruding mouth. N'tomo masks were worn by boys as they passed through the early cycle of initiation into manhood. The masks reinforce the lessons the boys are taught as they are prepared by elder males in the society for circumcision. Stand not included.
