- NORMAN ROCKWELLAmerican 1897-1978Study
NORMAN ROCKWELLAmerican 1897-1978Study for Fixing a Flat''. The finished version of ''Fixing a Flat'' appeared on the August 3 1946 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Inscribed in ink lower right ''Best wishes to my good and patient friend Herb Townsend. Sincerely Norman Rockwell.''Note: Accompanied by one handwritten and six typed letters from Rockwell to Mr. Townsend. The letters are all signed by Rockwell and dated from 1960-1962. Their content pertains to a collection of images by noted illustrator Howard Pyle. According to the letters Rockwell was saddened at the loss of his Pyle reference materials in his 1943 studio fire. In a letter from April 19 1960 Rockwell notes ''Howard Pyle has always been my ideal and it was perhaps my greatest loss in the fire to lose my collection''. Mr. Townsend sent Rockwell a loose portfolio of Pyle images for which Rockwell wanted to send a finished work as a thank you. In another letter Rockwell laments ''For two years now I have felt unhappy about not being able to send you an original ... It may sound silly to you but it is almost impossible for me to get an original that isn't a louzy [sic] one ...''. In the last handwritten letter Rockwell states ''I am sending this sketch on tissue only as a stop-gap until I get you a decent original. You see most of my works are owned by the advertiser or in the case of The Post the originals go on a travelling show for a couple of years''. The lot includes all seven original letters as well as the box of Pyle material. Rockwell returned them to Mr. Townsend as he was unable to provide a finished original in exchange.Pencil on tissue paper 19'' x 15'' sight. Framed.''
