PAIR OF 18TH C. GERMAN EQUESTRIAN ENGRAVINGSTwo German double-page copper plate engravings of equestrian scenes, from Methode et Invention Nouvelle de Dresser les Chevaux , whose three editions were published in 1658, 1737, and 1743. The illustrations depict equestrian training techniques developed by William Cavendish (1592-1676), the expatriated Duke of Newcastle who opened a riding school in Antwerp. Engravers Johann Ziegers and Georg Lehmanns, Nuremburg. Each engraving is well presented in a burled frame with gilt edges.
The images measure 10 1/2" x 14" and 10 1/2" x 13 1/4", respectively, and each frame measures 22" x 24 1/4".
Provenance: The Webster House collection.
Condition
Each shows toned evidence of reinforcement of the centerfold down the center of the sheet. Some toning commensurate with age.

In addition, a Nova Scotia tree branch bird whistle with a carved blue-painted bird perched on top -- the bird slides back and forth to alter the whistle tone, circa 1930. L: 7.5". It shows the river systems that were known, French forts and settlements at the time, and identifies native villages, missions, along with the settlements. It is one of the first maps to locate Chicago (R. et Port de Checagou); a remarkable and rare example. Measuring, 19 3/4" x 25 1/4" at sight.
