USS POTOMAC CAPTAIN NICHOLSON NOTEBOOK, 1836 United State Ship Potomac captains maritime notebook possibly belonging to Commodore Joseph James Nicholson (American 1791-1838), with latter entries by a different hand, having a soft marbled paper cover, first entered date of 1836, last date of 1864. Note: the frigate USS Potomac was launched in March 1822 and would see active duty in Indonesia, South America, the Caribbean, as well as serving as a blockade ship during the American Civil War. She was decommissioned on January 13, 1877. A miniature portrait of Nicholson by Anna Claypoole Peale is held in the collections of the Maryland Center for History and Culture. Duodecimo.
