THREE (3) EAST TN PIECED & APPLIQUE QUILTS, INCL. PRIZE...1st item: Irish Chain pieced quilt made of cotton prints and solids in red, black, claret, and white. Quilt is hand-pieced and hand-quilted. Penciled quilting lines are still visible. Binding is attached by sewing machine and the backing is an off-white thin cotton fabric. An undated 1st Prize blue ribbon for the "Old Quilts Category" in Gray, Tennessee accompanies the quilt. 68 1/2" x 83". Circa 1910. 2nd item: Irish Chain pattern cotton quilt in primary colors of printed red and green, all pieced and quilted by hand with an overall cross-hatched quilting design. The medium-green binding along the edges and curved corners was hand applied separately. 70" x 85". Circa 1890-1910. 3rd item: Pieced cotton quilt featuring an original variation of Whig's Defeat, stitched in colors of red and tan (originally green) on a white ground. The quilt is all pieced, appliqued and quilted by hand. 87" x 75 1/2". Circa 1895.

Condition:
1st item: Unwashed. Minor 2-inch stain on top along fold line. Back has minor darkening along the fold line. 2nd item: Top has staining along folds as well as some general discoloration and minor spotting. The backing has a stain on binding edge that bled through to the front. 3rd item: Quilt is unwashed with visible penciled quilting lines. Small 1/4-inch stains on top. Scattered minor stains and discoloration along the fold lines are visible on backing.

3 AMERICAN PIECED COTTON QUILTS1st item: Hand-pieced, quilted, and bound cotton quilt, variation of "Trip Around the World" pattern with a single white square placed between each colored square having a single border at the top; fabrics include double greens, double pinks, cheddar, and a navy and white stripe. Binding is navy with small white print. Backing panels (from 33-inch-wide yardage) are machine-sewn. Quilting has been completed by the piece. 67" H x 75" W. Circa 1880. 2nd item: Hand-pieced and quilted cotton quilt, "Dutch Rose" pattern set within white areas having feathered wreath and undulating feather borders quilting designs. The cotton prints are a double pink and a double green seen frequently in early 20th century Colonial Revival quilts. Binding is attached by machine. 74" H x 77" W. Circa 1930. 3rd item: Hand-pieced and quilted mid-20th century "Lone Star" pattern quilt in bright solid colors. The white areas outside the star have feathered wreath quilting designs. Backing is a solid yellow cotton. The quilt was likely made with a commercial pattern, not a kit. 75" H x 76" W. Circa 1935-1945.
Condition:
1st item: Unwashed condition. Front white squares are slightly dingy. Watermark on top near the border. The back is very clean with very light discoloration along the fold lines. 2nd item: Very clean condition overall on front. Backing has 2 sizable water stains (6 1/2" x 2") and (14" x 7 1/2") with slight discoloration on the fold lines. The cotton batting is coming out in places along the machine-applied binding. 3rd item: Pencil lines still visible for the quilting motifs; this piece has probably never been washed. Yellow backing has one darkened rectangular area (12" x 17") as well as other smaller areas of similar reddish-brown discoloration. A velcro strip is attached for hanging.

3 EAST TN TEXTILES: QUILTS AND BEDCOVERThree (3) East Tennessee Textiles, including two (2) Quilts. 1st item: East Tennessee cotton pieced Double Wedding Ring quilt, constructed of narrow rings of multi-colored prints. Each ring center has a four-lobed floral quilting motif and the outer white border is quilted in an undulating wave design. Quilt is bound with a separate pink binding and has a plain white cotton backing. 83 3/4" x 74 1/4". Circa 1940's. 2nd item: Single bed-sized hand-made Cross-Stitch Kit Quilt named "Williamstown" comprised of a hand pieced white quilted ground with a hand embroiderd red cross stitch pattern with overall hand-stitched quilting. 79" x 89". Circa 1960's. Note: The quilt kit was offered in the 1959-60 Herrschner's catalog in two sizes (single and double) and with three embroidery thread colors (red, blue and brown). The cost in 1960 was about $14 for the pre-stamped top fabric, backing, and thread. 3rd item: East Tennessee "Cathedral Windows" pattern bedcover, comprised of individual blocks that were made separately and then joined to the others by hand. This example is exceptionally large with a myriad of fabric colors and prints from dresses of the 1960s. Quiltmaker has even "fussy-cut" some print pieces to use as centers of some "windows". 59 1/2" x 70". 20th century.

Condition:
1st item: Quilt is in unwashed clean condition. Pencil-marked quilting lines are still visible on top. There are very light stain areas on the top and some discolored fold lines on the back. 2nd item: Clean, washed condition. A small area of red dye bleeding through to the top is visible. Some minor loss to embroidery. 3rd item: Clean/washed condition. Minor color bleeding is visible to the back.
