Hicks oak/ivory barometer, oak case with carved scrolls and bosses throughout, carved pediment with shield above two canted finely engraved ivory barometer faces marked "J Hicks, 8 Hatton Garden, London", central section with thermometer, circular bone setting dials, British, early 19th century, 43-1/2 in. One barometer marked "First rise after low foretells stronger blow", one "Long foretold, long last, short notice soon past". Old possibly original surface, several minor chips and corner losses, otherwise good condition, back not removed to examine interior. Private Collection.

ENGLISH OAK ADMIRAL FITZROY BAROMETERThe rectangular oak casing with an applied paper-back printed in a Gothic style, with thermometer and an indicator on each side. Height 41 in. Width 10 in. (Cond: good, tube retains mercury) Cf. Admiral Fitzroy (1805-1865) was captain of the HMS Beagle, the ship Charles Darwin sailed upon venturing to Patagonia and the Gallopades. It was after Admiral Fitzroy retirement from his Governorship of New Zealand in 1845, that turned his attention to meteorology and invented his version of the barometer. Condition:

LTD, LONDON, 19TH CENTURY, the rectangular golden oak and beveled glass case covering a lacquered and grained brass eight day mechanism, with a front silvered metal barometer ring dial denoting the various weather conditions and numbered 28-31, over "Ro No 428606 / W. GREGORY & Co LTD / 51, STRAND / LONDON.," enclosing a blued steel crescent moon topped hand, before an arched rectangular bone Fahrenheit thermometer opposite a brass cased miniature red ink-filled glass bottle with stopper, on a conforming base stand with a two sectioned chart drawer enclosing printed 8 day charts both used and unused, raised on corner shaped bracket feet. Height: 8 1/4" Width: 14 3/8" Depth: 8 1/2"
