SICAN SILVER BIRDS W/ GOLD
SICAN SILVER BIRDS W/ GOLD DETAILING (PR)Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 850 to 1000 CE. A pair of rare, fascinating objects - high percentage silver-bodied birds with hammered 16K sheet gold covering their upper portions and forming their heads. Each bird has a long beak ending in a rounded dot of gold. Their heads have incised features, including large eyes; on one, a ridged band around the back and on the wing may be imitations of feathers. Birds are very common motifs in Sican goldwork. Based on similar examples from the Jan Mitchell Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (see below), the silver lower parts of the birds were probably once vessels. Their surfaces here can be partially seen, and they are sparingly decorated with stamped linear and geometric motifs. Size of one (they are flattened): 5.6" W (14.2 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Most of what we know about Sican comes from a large area called the Batan Grande Archaeological Complex, a huge ceremonial and cemetery site for a little-understood ancient civilization. Building pyramids that rise over 40 m high and thousands of tombs, the Sican occupied this region for a lengthy period. Fabulous finds - often containing gold and silver objects - mark out the graves of the ancient elite. These tombs were filled with human sacrifices, mantles made of shell and feathers, lapis lazuli, cinnabar, scepters, arrows, effigy jars, and vessels like these probably once were.

TAIRONA POTTERY FIGURAL OCARINAS W/
TAIRONA POTTERY FIGURAL OCARINAS W/ DEITY & CACIQUEPre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A fine pair of mold-made ocarinas in figural forms. The larger whistle is incredibly detailed and in the form of a jaguar-faced shaman or deity with a massive, crescent-shaped headdress and twin serpents flanking him. The surface is decorated with incised lines, shapes, and stippling, creating a wonderful texture. An opening in the top of the headdress and center of the undecorated back and four small holes along the lower front part of the ocarina allowed the instrument to be played. The other ocarina is similar in profile but depicts a warrior or cacique (lord) seated on a crescent shaped throne, with a mouthpiece on his headdress and additional tonal holes for playing. Both ocarinas are functional and emit whistling tones. Size of larger ocarina: 3.35" L x 2.8" W (8.5 cm x 7.1 cm); smaller: 2" L x 1.5" W (5.1 cm x 3.8 cm)

RARE PARACAS POLYCHROME BOWL
RARE PARACAS POLYCHROME BOWL OCULATE BEING, TL'DPre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Ica Valley, Paracas culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A hand-built pottery bowl exhibiting astounding decorative motifs that are incised across the exterior surfaces and painted with vibrant hues of marigold, peach, teal, coral, pistachio, and espresso. The vessel is of a round-bottomed but stable form with tall walls and a thin rim that surrounds the deep basin, and the top of the rim is outlined with a solid strip of dark red pigment. The incised concentric rectangular decorations around the exterior walls represent a series of abstract 'eyes' that peer outwards around the circumference, each being separated by a blue-green column. Etched on the bottom of the bowl is a highly abstract deity known as the "Oculate Being" - so called because of his massive eyes - who flies among a field of cruciform 'stars' and has a pair of wavy horns, green whiskers, a green arrow, and a lengthy beard emanating from his head, all encircling a visage bearing an ear-to-ear grin. Size: 8" Diameter x 3.625" H (20.3 cm x 9.2 cm)
