N.Y.V. / March 1st 1863; the left side of the sword's 32 in. blade is etched with an American Eagle and scroll bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, there is additional foliate decoration on both sides of the blade; the ricasso has a scroll engraved "Made by Ames MFG Co CHICOPEE, MASS; the pierced guard features "US" amid foliage; the grip wrapped in ray skin bound with brass wire.

M1860 PRESENTATION SWORD FOR GAR Model 1860 staff and field officer's presentation sword by Shannon, Miller and Crane NY; (American active mid-19th to early 20th century), grip is silver tone and gilded above a German made blade etched with patriotic symbols including an eagle, US, drums, cannons and flags, the steel and gilt brass scabbard having an engraved presentation reading: "Presented to Past dept Com. E. J. Atkinson by his staff Feby, 1899. " Note: Edward J Atkinson (1833-1920), enlisted in Company A, 83rd regiment of the New York volunteers in 1861. He served two years. He was elected to be a New York GAR Department Commander in 1895. This sword was presented to him after his GAR service. Approximate measurements: blade l. 30. 5" overall l. 37"; overall with sword sheathed in scabbard. l. 39".

THREE OFFICERS DRESS SWORDS, ONE NAMED Three US officer's dress swords, the first an Ames (American), M1860 officers dress sword, with an eagle and stars pommel, an eagle guard and an etched blade with patriotic symbols including eagles, flags, drums, and the letters N. S. H. S. C; the second, a WW1 period US Navy officer?s m1852 sword made by E. Pietrangelo (Annapolis, MD) having a gilded handle and guard above a blade etched with patriotic symbols of Navy life, including anchors, eagle, knots, anchor with shield and 15 stars, with an ornate scabbard mount; the third sword a M1860, made and sold by Charles Svendsen (Cincinnati Oh), having a pommel with an eagle on one side and a coat of arms on the other, a wire wrapped shagreen covered grip, a guard with patriotic symbols above a blade etched with an open book, presumed to be a bible, florals and geometric shapes, named to John F. Malonen, reverse shows same symbolism and etched 'Knights of St. John", with ornate scabbard.
