Vases feature decoration of peonies, cherry blossoms, quails, and irises. Impressed signature to underside of tallest ‘H Co. L 150’ with glazed artist's initials to side of body ‘EDs’. Note: Max Ernst had a fascination with birds and used bird imagery in his work often. Ernst created an alter-ego for himself in the form of a bird named Loplop who appears in many works throughout the years and became a link to the artist's subconscious. This drawing does not appear in Max Erst, Ouevre-Katalog. It was at one time part of the collection of the Belgian Surrealist poet and artist Marcel Marien.
Condition
Several small tears at the sheet edges. The right edge irregularly trimmed. A small split center right. Creasing and surface soiling.

LEATHER SHIRT, LIKELY CREE, MID 20TH CENTURYA light tan hide shirt with hand cut abalone buttons, full collar and two pockets. The collar tips are embroidered with floral sprigs in blue, green and red while the pockets have an embroidered blue bird carrying a floral sprig in its beak above two embroidered roses with beaded centres and green stems. Size is roughly a men’s medium with lots of length. Likely Cree, mid-20th century. FRANCAIS: Chemise en peau de daim beige clair avec boutons en ormeau taillés à la main, avec col et deux poches. Les pointes du col sont brodées motifs floraux en bleu, vert et rouge, les poches sont brodées d’un oiseau bleu portant une brindille dans son bec au-dessus de deux roses perlées à tiges vertes. Taille relativement moyenne pour hommes mais longue. Probablement Cris, milieu du 20e siècle.

LARGE OVOID STONEWARE CONTAINER, 1865-75A large ovoid stoneware storage crock with cobalt blue bird motif. Found in Newington near Cornwall. Unmarked, very good condition, minor stain on base, no cracks. Apparently, when picked, this rare piece of Ontario stoneware was being used as a water cooler in the village store. 1865-75. Ex Lawless collection. Dimensions, 23" x 16". FRANCAIS: Grande et rare cruche ovoïde en grès à motif d'oiseau bleu cobalt. Trouvé à Newington près de Cornwall. Sans marque, très bon état, petite tache sur la base, pas de fêle. Apparemment, lors de la cueillette, cette pièce servait de refroidisseur d'eau dans le magasin du village. 1865-75. CARVED MANTLE CLOCK, QUEBEC, 1895A folky carved mantle clock case having an arched centre door sculpted with two standing birds at a tree, while the surrounding frame is carved with a winged horse on each side followed by deep foliate and lattice carving over the door. A carved sawtooth border adorns the base molding. Dated 1895. Quebec origin although found in Hawkesbury, Ontario. The clock is in working order. H: 17"; W/L: 20"; D/P: 6". FRANCAIS: Horloge de cheminée fortement sculptée avec porte centrale arquée sculptée de deux oiseaux, le cadre est sculpté d'un cheval ailé de chaque côté, suivi d'une profonde sculpture en feuillage et en treillis autour de la porte. Bordure sculptée en dents de scie orne la moulure de la base. Daté de 1895. Origine québécoise bien que trouvé à Hawkesbury, Ont. L'horloge est fonctionnelle.
