SILVER CALUMET & HECLA MINING MEDAL 1918 This silver medal has on the reverse "July 1918/Calumet and Hecla/Mining Company/In Recognition of / Faithful and Efficient/ Service / For A Period of 30 Years / To / Berger Berner. Interesting history of the mine, copper being discovered in Michigan in1864 and by 1868 through 1886 it was the leading copper producing mine in the US and in the world from 1871-1880 - paying out $72 million in dividends in the 19th century. It built the first industrial hospital in the US in 1868. Its mines reached a depth of 4,900 feet and operated for over 100 years, finally shutting down in 1970. The man on the right of the medal appears to be Alexander Aggassiz, one of the first people to run the mine. Silver sheen and classic silver ring tone. Heavier, at 97.9 grams, than the bronze version sold last month but this one was for 30 years service. Brenners signature on the shoulder of Mr. Aggassiz on the right edge

Remarkable Sixth Plate Daguerreotype of a Heavily Armed Trapper Anonymous sixth plate daguerreotype of a trapper or hunter striking a resolute pose. Dressed for winter he wears a heavy wooljacket and fur cap. He displays a full stock percussion rifle for the camera and is further outfitted with Colt model 1849 pocket revolver knife belt axe powder horn and fine leather hunting pouch. Strapped to his back is a large bundle of furs or fur-wrapped bedroll. Housed in a full leather case separated at the spine. Found recently in North Carolina. A stunning image. Condition: Solarization at mat edges. Two small circles of discoloration centered on the gold tinting on the buckles of the trapper's belt and strap.

YUKON GOLD RUSH PHOTOGRAPHS LETTER AND SCRIMSHAW. Includes three mounted photographs: a camp scene a river scene and a group portrait of ''Pioneers of Dawson City.'' Together with a a naively carved walrus tusk with boats human figures walruses birds and seals 9 1/2''l. and a letter home dated October 19 1891. Also is included is a real-photo postcard with reindeer. Pictured in the front row of the ''Pioneers'' is William Liggett. Liggett was a neighbor and friend of the Brake family and his sister married into the Brake family. See also lots 965 and 966 for other items from the Brake-Liggett family. In his letter from Forty Mile Creek in the Yukon he details daily life as a goldminer in Alaska. The photographs with some fading and soiling but still quite clear; the tusk yellowed the tip has been gone for a very long time the other end has been cut off at some point after it was carved.
