Beth Cavener Stichter (1973 USA)
Beth Cavener Stichter (1973 USA) Olympia2006Stoneware porcelain slip and paint; ht. 26 wd. 48.5 dp. 35 in.Olympia is one of sculptor Beth Cavener Stichter's most important works widely illustrated and exhibited. It brings together all the central themes in her art; risk seduction trust abuse and her profound and at times disquieting and intimate examination of sexuality. This work like all of Stichter's "animal" art is actually a portrait of a real person with the goat acting as avatar. She relates this work to John Berger's book Way of Seeing in which he writes that men are pure surveyors while women need to be both surveyor and surveyed to survive.References: This work is illustrated in both publications as well as cover image for Clark Garth. AFTER JACOB LAWRENCE (AMERICAN 1917-2000), 'OLYMPISCHE SPIELE MUNCHEN 1972', COLOR LITHOGRAPHIC POSTER, UNFRAMED: 39 3/4 X 25 1/4 IN. (101 X 64.1 CM.)After Jacob Lawrence (American 1917-2000), 'Olympische Spiele Munchen 1972', Color Lithographic Poster,, Jacob Lawrence was an African American painter known for his portrayal of African American historical figures. His most well-known works include the series of Haitian General Toussaint L'Ouverture, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Lawrence taught at the University of Washington. His works appear in collections all over the country, including the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others. One of many artists asked to design posters for the 1972 Olympic Games, Jacob Lawrence chose to commemorate the involvement of African American athletes by showing all Black athletes running a track race. This imagery and the timing of the work were historically important since these were the first games held in Germany since the 1936 games where Jesse Owens won four gold medals. Lawrence's work had the added significance of coming on the heels of the 1968 Mexico Olympics, where Tommie Smith and John Carlos, while on the podium for their gold and bronze medals respectively, protested human and African American rights by donning black gloves and raising their fists. Dimensions: Unframed: 39 3/4 x 25 1/4 in. (101 x 64.1 cm.)
