SIGNED JUAN GOMEZ-QUIROZ LITHOGRAPH
SIGNED JUAN GOMEZ-QUIROZ LITHOGRAPH "STAR HUNTING"Juan Manuel Gomez-Quiroz (Chilean, 1939-1921). "Star Hunting" lithograph, edition 7/50, ca. 1960s. Signed by the artist in pencil on lower right. Titled in pencil on lower left. Numbered 7/50 in pencil at lower center. A mesmerizing piece by Chilean artist Juan Gomez-Quiroz that clearly demonstrates the artist's fascination with abstraction, though the title conjures associations with the celestial world. Gomez-Quiroz was greatly influenced by Abstract Expressionism and the techniques and principles of Action Painting which dominated the art world in the 1950s. Other important influences on Gomez-Quiroz were Roberto Antonio Matta (1911-2002) and Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). Size of image: 23.625" L x 19.5" W (60 cm x 49.5 cm) Approximate size of sheet: 29.5" L x 22" W (74.9 cm x 55.9 cm) Size of frame: 30.25" L x 22.75" W (76.8 cm x 57.8 cm)
Juan Manuel Gomez-Quiroz was born in Santiago de Chile on February 20, 1939. A painter as well as a printmaker, he studied at the Gregorio de la Fuente workshop in 1956 and the following year enrolled at the School of Fine Arts, University of Chile. In 1962 he received a Fulbright Scholarship and traveled to study at the Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University's School of Art and Architecture. Eventually, Gomez-Quiroz settled in New York, studied at the Pratt Graphic Center, and was an adjunct professor of art at NYU (New York University) from 1969 to 1976 and also taught at FIT's (Fashion Institute of Technology) Printmaker Workshop. In 1986, he became a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Hispanic Art, and he was a member of the jury at the Olympic Arts Competition. In addition to the visual art world, Gomez-Quiroz adored literature and explored art book techniques. He created a 3-D book of Pablo Neruda poetry, was president of the H.H. Silverman Publishing Company from 1986 to 1988, and director of the Writer's Space at Hostos Community College from 1995 to 2000.

RODOLFO MORALES COLLAGE "LA DAMA
RODOLFO MORALES COLLAGE "LA DAMA USO IMAGINACION" 1991**First Time At Auction**
Rodolfo Morales (1925-2001). "La Dama Uso Imaginacion" collage, 1991. Signed at lower right. A colorful, dream-like collage by Mexican artist Rodolfo Morales titled "La Dama Uso Imaginacion" (The Lady Used Imagination). Morales' collage - constructed with embroidery yarn, lace, metallic foils, various textile trims and appliques, as well as cut fabric and paper - presents a delightful surrealist vignette. Dressed in a yellow dress with a black and white striped coat and black lace trim, the woman strikes a curious pose, bending her head down toward her right with outstretched arms, and holds a yellow purse with a trim of silver seashell motifs. Behind her, a dramatic blue visage stares out from a background comprised of red and white polygons arranged in a patchwork pattern. A captivating collage by Rodolfo Morales, mounted behind glass in an attractive Mexican tin frame that is embellished with traditional folk art designs. Size (collage): 19.5" L x 13.5" W (49.5 cm x 34.3 cm) Size (frame): 23.25" L x 17.4" W (59.1 cm x 44.2 cm)
Oaxaca master Rodolfo Morales attended the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City and taught art at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria in Mexico City. He was relatively unknown until Rufino Tamayo discovered his work in 1975 at his first solo exhibition in Cuernavaca. Ever since, Morales' art has been widely exhibited. Highlights include: "Aspects of Contemporary Mexican Painting" at the Americas Society, New York (1990); "Mito y Magia in America" at Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Monterrey, Mexico (1991); Hechizo de Oaxaca in the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City (1992); "Myth and Magic: Oaxaca Past and Present" at the Palo Alto (California) Cultural Center (1994); and "Rodolfo Morales: Juegos y Evocaciones" (1996), a retrospective of Morales' work opened at the Mexican Museum in San Francisco and toured the United States and Canada. In addition, Morales has had major mural commissions in Oaxaca and Mexico City.

HEDDA STERNE, ROMANIA / NEW YORK
HEDDA STERNE, ROMANIA / NEW YORK (1910-2011), UNTITLED, 1991, OIL ON CANVAS, 36"H X 23 3/4"W. 40"H X 27 3/4"W (FRAME)Hedda Sterne, Romania / New York, (1910-2011) untitled, 1991, oil on canvas signed and dated verso. Provenance: purchased from CDS Gallery, NYC, in 2000. Biography from the archives of AskArt: Hedda Sterne was the only female member of the small, rebel mid-century group of 28 artists known as the "Irascibles", which included Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Clyford Still and Theodoros Stamos. They challenged the Metropolitan Museum of Art by protesting a juried exhibition intended to increase the museum's collection of contemporary art. In 1950, these artists banded together and signed a petition accusing the curator and director of loading the jury with critics hostile to "advanced art," particularly Abstract Expressionism. Such would be a great catalyst for the movement, drawing significant press coverage and public awareness. Hedda Sterne is known for her divergence from using mediums and forms contemporaneous with the times. She was one of the first to experiment with acrylic spray paint and also the return of the tondo shape to the art market. The year 1941, was a landmark year for Sterne as her move to New York was overshadowed by her inclusion in the Art of This Century exhibition, funded by the Guggenheim. It was here where notable dealer Betty Parsons discovered Sterne's work and gave her a solo exhibition at the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1943 and it was for this exhibition that Sterne first presented her use of circular canvases to create the Tondo Series. These tondos are mounted on a central axis so the viewer can turn them at will to gain varying perspectives. A pioneer in her use of both medium and form, Sterne used the tondo throughout the balance of her career. The theme of Sterne's works during the 1940's and 1950's was essentially machine-based, influenced by her early studies in France with Surrealism and abstraction. Some of her early works, including the New York Series from the 1950's, depicted "hurtling trains, derricks, and bridges as though they were looming monsters". It was a highly successful endeavor by the artist to portray the pace and power of the big city. Sterne's use of acrylic spray paint allowed her to echo speed and motion while also discovering that illusion of depth could be achieved without the use of traditional laws of perspective. It was also during this time period that she became associated with the New York School, and as a result began using more primary colors. Sterne's work is represented in the permanent collections of numerous museums including the Whitney, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago. © 2008 Levis Fine Art, Inc. oil on canvas Dimensions: 36"H x 23 3/4"W. 40"H x 27 3/4"W (frame)
