Unusual Asian Trade .900 Silver
Unusual Asian Trade .900 Silver "Samorodok" Cigarette Case, first quarter 20th century, of rectangular form with slightly bowed sides and deeply textured finish, with an applied medallion of a wine bottle and playing cards, opening, by means of a thumbpiece, to a gilt interior, l. 4", w. 3", 3.79 t. oz. This unusual case bears Ukrainian import marks, indicating that it was brought into the port city of Odessa between 1908 and 1926. The .900 silver content (as marked) suggests an Asian origin, and the "Samorodok" style was clearly intended for the Russian market. It likely, then, that this case originates from one of the Asian countries along the Silk Road leading to the Black Sea, possibly one of the Central Asian protectorates that were not formally incorporated into Russian territory until the formation of the Soviet Union, e.g. Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan.
