OTHELLO SHAKESPEARIAN SCENE O/CLarge 19th century oil on canvas genre painting, depicting the Shakespearian character Othello meeting his future wife, Desdemona, and her father in their Venetian home. Unsigned. Likely original carved giltwood frame. Sight - 29 1/2" H x 39 3/4" W, Framed - 39 1/2" H x 49 5/8" W. Probably European, mid to late 19th century.
Condition:
Overall cracquelure, especially to the upper right quadrant. Minor tear in upper left quadrant with corresponding patch en verso. Scattered overall losses to frame with significant losses to right side and scattered re-gilding.

AFTER PIETRO CALVI (1833 - 1884 ) 13 ½" thick x 12 ½" wide x 20 ½" tall Othello. Fashioned in chalk plaster after one of many different poses by Calvi. This was a special commission for Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing in 1960, by Austin Products of Brooklyn N.Y.; whose sculpture business was in its infancy, signed on the back for 3M. Othello is one of the most beloved characters of Shakespeare. Sir Lawrence Olivia, portrayed the character in a 1965 production, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. The plot is classic. The ease at which humans can be influenced to lose faith in those they love.

Without frontispiece which has been noted in one copy and with questionable authenticity. Ex-libris bibliographer Percival F.
