A rare Chelsea Pottery Bahamas period 'Owl' jar and cover c.1960 the cover modelled as an owl's head decorated in polychrome all over with birds amid flowers and leaves on a beige ground incised mark beneath 11.5in. Estimate ?200-300 There are minor scratches and abrasions all over the piece otherwise in good condition. Comes copmplete with a bill of receipt for dispatch from McCartney-Thompson Co Ltd Nassau Bahamas to the Honourable Mrs R Evans dated 10th January 1964. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Joseph Rusling Meeker (American/Louisiana 1827-1889) "Great Horned Owl and Fledgling at Dusk" 1882 oil on canvas signed and dated lower left 21 in. x 17 3/4 in. later frame. Note: Joseph Rusling Meeker is famed for his atmospheric views of Louisiana's swamps and bayous. On a few rare occasions in his work he has placed a large exquisitely rendered bird such as an eagle or an egret prominently in the composition. In the work offered here a great horned owl and its fledgling stare intently at the viewer in the right foreground while the sun sets in the distance over a bayou landscape. The great horned owl is believed to be a symbol of divine wisdom by the Creek Indians. A very fierce bird the great horned owl will vigorously defend its nest and territory and has the reputation of being the only owl that has ever killed a man. During this period of westward expansion in the United States these attributes and themes would have resonated within American politics and society.
