African (Yoruba, Nigeria), 19th century, carved wood. In the form of a priestess, the top of the wand formed in a way symbolizing thunderbolts, which are hurled to punish wrongdoers who anger Shango, the Yoruba orisha of thunder, and deified former king of the Yoruba city of Oyo. Only senior priestesses or priests devoted to Shango can dance with such a staff in ritual performances and other events. These priests invite Shango to possess them, making the deity accessible to the gathered worshippers.
