George Rodrigue (American/Louisiana, b. 1944) "Opening Oysters at Bayou Pettitance", 1978, from the "Traditional Series", oil on canvas, signed lower right "Rodrigue", copyrighted and signed on canvas verso, dated on stretcher, titled on stretcher verso, 40" x 30". Handsomely framed. This iconic image of life on the bayou is used as one of the many illustrations by George Rodrigue in the cookbook, Talk About the Good II, published by the Junior League of Lafayette. Mr. Rodrigue's recollections regarding this image, "People have enjoyed eating oysters in South Louisiana for hundreds of years. Legend has it that the pirates who hid out in the bayous of South Louisiana ate nothing but oysters. Today, oyster bars are found in small and large restaurants throughout the area. Oysters are considered quite the delicacy. Anyone who has ever opened an oyster understands that it is much easier to eat one than to open one. My research for this painting was easily done, I simply painted a Saturday afternoon gathering at a friend's house, where he opened the oysters and I watched and enjoyed eating them. A copy of the cookbook accompanies this lot.
