Early American Patriotic Painted Drum Ca 1795. 15.75'' height x 16'' diameter. Void of maker's label. Black stenciled letters Liberty and initials AJF. ''Chicken head'' eagle with patriotic shield. The eagle is clutching a 16-star American flag in one talon and olive branches in the other. Body of drum is secured together at the seam with rivets. Condition: Very good. Batter head has a large tear across it. There is a 14'' tear that has been stitched together intersecting the main tear. Head is stenciled ''E.C.'' Leather snares are present.

Including 2 Pueblo drums, both painted about the exterior, the smaller also painted at top and bottom; and 1 other hand crafted by a boy scout in the Native American tradition, cylindrical shape with a single handle at the side, the hide top is painted in dark yellow, red, black and white, with traces of fur. General wear overall, especially the paint. The largest with damage to string; smallest with damage to the top and strings. 6 3/4-11" high. ESTIMATE $300-500

The hollowed out cavity and the wide unpainted band around the upper edge reinforces the story that it originally was a ceremonial drum with a skin tightly fastened over the top.
