9TH C. INDIAN PALA STONE PANEL
9TH C. INDIAN PALA STONE PANEL SEATED LOKESHVARA**Originally Listed At $800**
South Asia, India, Pala Empire, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A beautiful stone panel featuring Lokeshvara, a form of Avalokiteshvara the bodhisattva of compassion, sitting in half lotus position with his right knee propped up as a lotus flower rises to his left. Though mostly nude, his slender, hourglass figure is draped in sinuous chains of beads with anklets and armbands adorning his limbs and a towering headdress crowning his serene visage. Coiled locks fall to his shoulders as he gently tilts his head in a sensitive pose. A petite figure and 2 animals are carved in relief beneath his double lotus throne, and a flame-bordered mandorla sits behind him. The Pala empire was a time of great stability for the Indian subcontinent, and the arts flourished during this period with wealthy patrons from the ruling class. This panel is intricately carved with incredible details. The sculptor's delineation of jewelry and ornate elements reflect prosperity as well as the elaborate Pala style. Size: 5.2" W x 8" H (13.2 cm x 20.3 cm)
Provenance: private Loveland, Colorado, USA collection; ex-established German collection, Auktionshaus Blank, Vibel, Germany, 2019

8TH C. INDIAN PALA STONE RELIEF
8TH C. INDIAN PALA STONE RELIEF OF VISHNUSouth Asia, India, region of Bengal, Pala Empire, ca. 8th to 12th centuries CE. A beautiful relief and openwork carved stone plaque depicting the Hindu deity Vishnu. The god stands upon a deep shelf-like base, with diminutive pillars flanking his legs, likely representing simplified figures of devotees. He is depicted holding his traditional attributes in his 4 arms that help identify his character - although rendered with reduced details, one familiar with Vishnu and his implements can identify each: in his lower left hand is a conch shell, a mace in his right hand, the chakra or discus in his upper-left hand, and his forward-right hand is raised in a mudra gesture. Vishnu wears his characteristic conical headdress and a calf length skirt, while his visage is delineated with strong stylized features. Vishnu's head is framed by an aureole incised into the surrounding panel. Size: 2.3" L x 0.65" W x 4.375" H (5.8 cm x 1.7 cm x 11.1 cm)
Vishnu is a blue-skinned, four-armed deity central to Hinduism: the protector and preserver of the world to Brahma's creator and Shiva's destroyer. Temples in Pala were built of brick, with carved stone images like this one were often set into wall niches. The Pala Empire was the last major Buddhist power in India, although their sculptural art, as here, often includes Hindu elements and iconography. They are well known for their sculpture, which was influenced by the Gupta period, and in turn influenced artwork in Tibet, Nepal, and Southeast Asia.
