PASTEL PORTRAIT OF PHILOTESIA OWENPastel portrait of Philotesia Owen (1697-1782 Philadelphia) , on paper, first half of the 18th c., half-length, in a brown dress with blue mantle, holding flowers before a pillar with landscape beyond. Philotesia married Quaker merchant, Robert Strettell (1693-1782), in 1716 and emigrated to Philadelphia in 1736; Strettell became a city councilman and later a Mayor of Philadelphia from 1752-1753. A handwritten paper note verso states According to family tradition this picture represents Philotesia Owen (daughter of Nathanael Owen of Sevenoaks and Frances Ridge of Chester his wife) born at Coulsdon 7/5/1697 & married Robert Strettell, then of Dublin 18/5/1716, d. at Philadelphia 26/6/1782 aged 85., 14 1/2" x 10". Provenance: A Prominent Delaware Collector.
