The raised mound with an open-mouthed snake devouring a frog, entwined around a crucifix laying upon steps of stone, a skull and cross bones at the entrance to a burial chamber. Height 3.75 in. Width 9.5 in. Depth 8 in. (Cond: good) Cf. Known in his time for his fantastic naturalistic creations, Jean-Charles Avisseau (1796-1861) followed in the traditions of the renowned 16th Century master potter, Bernard Palissy. Darwin’s 19th Century publications, along with the published works of other renowned naturalists, combined with a Romanism captivating all of Europe’s elite, led to the aristocracy and bourgeois classes studious fascination of natural history. Their homes, and in particular their drawing rooms were to become the residences of fantastic and ferocious bestiary objects, such as the Palissy created by Avisseau and others.
