Geometric palette knife strokes composing a lakeshore scene and island populated by a small grove of tall trees. Framed, Mccaughen & Burr label to verso.
"Franz Taussig" was Bedrich Fritta, Czech-Jewish artist and cartoonist operating out of Prague as a graphic illustrator, namely creating political caricature for the celebrated satirical magazine Simplicus . Fritta became one of the most notable artists to be imprisoned at Terezin, where he was deported in 1941 at the time of the impending war, only to be forcibly appointed director of the painting section of the Technical Department in the camp, providing graphic propaganda materials for his captors. He perished in Auschwitz.
After the war, an illustrated album dedicated to his son on his third birthday was found stowed away in Theresienstadt walls. “To Tommy for his Third Birthday in Terezin” see Jewish Museum of Berlin exhibition: www.jmberlin.de/fritta/en/bilderbuch-fuer-tommy.php.
