Notes: The work presented here is after the 1886 painting of the artist's grandson Sir William Milbourne James (later Admiral) now conserved on loan at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Liverpool. The painting, and its copyright, had been acquired by the owner of the Pears Soap Company, and it was replicated in an extensive, and highly successful and popular, series of advertisements.

TAYLOR'S PORCELAIN SHAVING SOAP
TAYLOR'S PORCELAIN SHAVING SOAP JARTaylor's Saponaceous Compound porcelain advertising jar. Manufactured by the H. P. and C. R. Taylor Company (established 1820) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The advertisement shows a man looking in a mirror at his clean shaven face; and, it reads, "This celebrated Shaving Soap has been in use more than Thirty Years and meets with increased Favour". The jar measures 3.5/8" in diameter x 1 7/8" tall. There are a few small chips to the lid rim & where the lid fits onto the body. Ward's works often depict pioneer life and feature the characters Miranda and Hezzakaiah. Her primitive, and sometimes humorous, works have since given her the affectionate title of "Grandma Moses of the Ozarks."
