Walter Inglis Anderson
Walter Inglis Anderson (American/Mississippi 1903-1965) "Two Pelicans in Flight" c. 1945 watercolor and pencil on paper estate stamp lower right 24 1/2 in. x 18 3/4 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of noted Mississippi art collector Bitsy Irby. Note: In 1940 Walter Anderson moved to his wife's family estate Oldfields in Gautier Mississippi. An extraordinarily productive period followed: he had time to draw paint and make block prints; to illustrate some of his favorite books experiment with the theories of dynamic symmetry and with the drawing methods of the Mexican artist and educator Adolfo Best Maugard. Maugard's theories provide a basis for Anderson's "Oldfields" watercolors. The lot offered here is of large scale compared to later Horn Island watercolors. "Two Pelicans in Flight" is an important example of dynamic symmetry and is stylistically representative of the work he created during his time at Oldfields.
