PNG PENIS GOURD + THAI PALAD KHIK
PNG PENIS GOURD + THAI PALAD KHIK PHALLIC AMULETOceania, Papua New Guinea highlands, ca. mid-20th century CE; Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A koteka, also known as a horim, penis gourd, or penis sheath, made from a hollowed gourd with a rattan weave around the rim and cord to tie around the wearer. The koteka is worn by indigenous men in the western parts of PNG, and the decoration and form relate to their tribal affiliation, with men from the same tribe wearing the same style. The other phallic object is a palad khik carved from buffalo horn into a penis, and engraved with a dragon and inscriptions, then highlighted with gold paint within the incised areas. A hole for suspension is bored through one end to wear as an amulet or to present to a shrine / altar to promote fertility or luck. Palad khik is a Thai phrase that translates to "honorable surrogate penis" and originates from the phallic Shiva lingam. Size of gourd: 3" L x 1.75" Diameter x 9" H (7.6 cm x 4.4 cm x 22.9 cm); 11" H (27.9 cm) included custom stand.

MINIATURE ROMAN STONE PHALLUS
MINIATURE ROMAN STONE PHALLUS PENDANTRoman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. This is an interesting hand carved stone amulet in the form of a phallus, symbolic of virility and fertility. The male genitalia are quite naturalistic, featuring a flaccid, curved penis over round testicles with incised swirls as pubic hair above. Attached atop the pendant is a suspension loop to string this piece on a cord as a protective pendant. Pendants such as this were often worn by soldiers in the field as a sign of their masculinity as well as by newlywed husbands hoping to increase their virility and fertility. In addition, disembodied examples like this were used as what Pliny described as a "medicus invidiae" to ward against bad luck and evil forces. The loop on this example is intact and perfect, and still could be worn today as a very bold accessory. Size: 1" L x 0.5" W (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm); 2" H (5.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

BULL PIZZLE CANE-Ca 1920 -The
BULL PIZZLE CANE-Ca 1920 -The single piece cane with an integral crook handle is fashioned of a stretched, twisted and dried bull penis. Stiff enough to lean on, the cane has an intriguing fibrous structure and honey toned color, yet a very unusual concept insofar as, contrary to the customary, its diameter starts thin at the top to widen at the bottom. -Much mysticism is attached to these canes which are also known as bovine, phallic or penile. In the old rural areas these were considered ideal sticks to reprimand a recalcitrant wife because they left no welts or scars from the beating and today they never fail to trigger an interesting controversies and conversation. -In addition to being used as a dog treat, pizzles are also eaten by humans for their purported health benefits (according to traditional Chinese medicine) such as being low in cholesterol and high in protein, hormones, vitamins and minerals such as calcium and magnesium, although little empirical evidence supports these claims. Scottish deer pizzles are thought to boost stamina and were used by Chinese athletes at the 2008 Summer Olympics. -H. 4 ¼” x 5”, O.L. 34 ½” -$200-$300

ROMANO-EGYPTIAN MACROPHALLUS FIGURE
ROMANO-EGYPTIAN MACROPHALLUS FIGURE PRIAPUS?Egypt, Roman Period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A remarkable terracotta male figure of either Priapus - the rustic Roman god of gardens and male genitalia - or Bes - the Egyptian deity worshipped as a protector of households - depicted as portly and bearded as he kneels before a jar, a draped robe falling to his knees to expose an erect phallus. Liberal remains of pigment adorn the body of the figure. This figure may also have served as a macrophallus: a style of hyper sexualized figurine common during the Roman Period in ancient Egypt that was used as a votive object to enhance fertility for all levels of society. The figure’s lack of formal elegance breaks significantly with other Egyptian representations at the time. Rather than following the typical standard of ideal bodily proportions, figures like this one highlighted the carnal, as the man places his phallus onto a dish as though presenting it as an offering. Size: 2.8" W x 5.5" H (7.1 cm x 14 cm)
Provenance: ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York City, New York, USA; ex-Desmond Morris collection, England
