PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH PAINTED DOWRY CHEST, INSCRIBED "ELISABETH WITMER IN ANNO 1811" Six Plank Pine Mennonite Mule Chest constructed of sturdy 1" members, painted in yellow ochre with wine trim, the top with applied friction fit molding, decorated with two tombstones of flowers, inscription at top in lozenge frame around the lock escutcheon, the iron lock intact but without key, flanked by rectangular framed flowers, three molded edge drawers bottom front having Sheraton brass bails and oval lock escutcheons, no keys, resting on exposed dovetail bracket base, the interior with covered till, 28" x 51" x 22", very good condition.

Pennsylvania paint-decorated dower chest, poplar throughout with pegged, dovetailed and rosehead nail construction, original iron strap hinges, interior candle till, original batwing brasses on two dovetailed drawers, bracket feet, untouched original surface with pale blue rectangular panels and painted inscription panel "17 Johannes Klein 96" on brilliant orange ground (now faded), Pennsylvania, dated 1796, 27-1/4 x 50-1/2 x 21-1/2 in. As-found condition with losses, wear and fading to painted surface especially to top, top warped, pest damage with some associated losses to feet. Estate of the Late William and Priscilla Carlebach, Mystic, Connecticut and Bedford, New York.
