Note: American artist Nicolay Leganger who exhibited at such prestigious institutions as the National Academy of Design and the Boston Art Club painted Luminist landscapes of New York Massachusetts Maine and New Hampshire particularly concentrating on lakes and waterways. The body of water represented here Penobscot Bay lies at the mouth of the Penobscot River at the center of Maine's coastline. The quiet way of life on this picturesque New England coast is beautifully depicted in this painting of a small fishing boat on the bay. The effect of Luminism is particularly apparent in the even golden light and the philosophy of the movement is represented in the tranquil contrast between the rowboat in the middle distance and the steamships in the background
