A magnificent terracotta royal wine jug of an impressively large scale, boasting an elegant silhouette and incised decoration of undulating, crisscross, and linear motifs along the shoulder and near the base. Enveloped in a rich hue of russet, the ancient jar displays a reverse piriform body and a rolled rim. During the 11th century, Amol was chosen as the capital of Persia and thus a bustling center for commerce and home of royals. A vessel like this may have been used for the storage and transport of lavish wines, which were likely consumed in excess during the flourishing pre-Safavid period. A beautiful and rare terracotta pitcher of magnificent size, intricately adorned with ribbon-like scrolls of clay around the neck and spout, as well as applied and incised decoration. The broad hip of the vessel dramatically narrows to a tubular neck, pinched spout, and arched handle, all sitting upon a discoid foot. Marlik is one of the most famous archaeological sites from this region, a mound or tepe containing a variety of fine objects, some of the nicest from this region and time period - this vessel is in the style of those found at that site. Ancient Central Asia, southern Azerbaijan and northern Iran, Ardabil region, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 2200 BCE. A fabulous tripod vessel comprised of a hemispherical bowl supported by impressively slender legs, all enveloped in an ash gray slip. The exterior surface is plain with raised concentric bands around the shoulder and 3 pierced lugs project from the sides for suspension or securing a lid. The interior basin is lightly etched with curvilinear or crosshatched patterning. It is not certain what this large tripod was used for β and either ritualistic or utilitarian, however it is possible this was used as a brazier or incense burner as it is similar in shape to basalt examples from the period.
