EDMOND PETITJEAN "RUE DE VILLAGE"
EDMOND PETITJEAN "RUE DE VILLAGE" PAINTINGEdmond Marie Petitjean (French, 1844-1925). Oil on canvas painting "Rue de Village" depicting a quiet city street landscape. Signed along the lower right. With two labels from Kurt E. Schon Ltd. Fine Art along the verso affixed to the stretcher. An older sticker from L'Art Francois affixed to the stretcher along the verso.
Petitjean became a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1883. He received numerous awards including a First Class medal from the salon in 1884 and a Second Class medal in 1885; a silver medal from the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and a gold medal in 1900; and he was named a Knight in the Legion of Honor in 1892.
Unframed; height:17 1/2 in x width: 25 1/2 in. Framed; height: 24 in x width: 31 1/2 in.
Condition:
The painting appears to be in good condition overall. The surface is stable and the colors are bold and bright. When inspected under UV it appears that there are no major restorations. Under UV there is a vertical area measuring approx. 3 inches just above the church at the end of the street that fluoresces. This is not a restoration but rather a crack that is beginning to form. There is craquelure throughout the work. Along the verso there are a few spots that indicate possibly moisture exposure. Wear and losses to the gilt frame.
